NASCAR said Jeremy Mayfield once again tested positive for methamphetamine and asked the federal judge who lifted the driver's drug suspension to reinstate the ban.

The positive result from a July 6 random test was included in a U.S. District Court filing yesterday that included an affidavit from Mayfield's stepmother, who claimed she personally witnessed the driver using methamphetamine at least 30 times in a seven-year period.

"Because Mr. Mayfield's repeated and confirmed use of methamphetamine violates NASCAR's Substance Abuse Policy, and because NASCAR must be permitted to protect the safety of its drivers, crews, and fans, as well as the integrity of the sport, defendants respectfully request that the court . . . reinstate NASCAR's suspension of Mr. Mayfield," NASCAR wrote in its filing.

Mayfield was suspended May 9 for failing a random drug test conducted eight days earlier. NASCAR later said he tested positive for methamphetamines, but Mayfield has denied using the illegal drug.

He sued, and U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen issued an injunction July 1 that allowed Mayfield to return to competition.

Mullen based his decision on Mayfield's argument that the testing system is flawed and there was a reasonable likelihood of a false positive. Mullen also gave NASCAR the right to test Mayfield at any time.

NASCAR did just that July 6 at Mayfield's home and said in its filings that the "A" sample had levels of methamphetamine consistent with habitual users who consume high doses.

But more damaging is an affidavit from Lisa Mayfield, who said she married Mayfield's father in a 2003 ceremony immediately following Mayfield's marriage to his wife, Shana.

"Between 1998 and 2005, I am personally aware that Jeremy used methamphetamines often," she said in her affidavit. "I saw Jeremy use methamphetamine by snorting it up his nose at least 30 times during the 7 years I was around him. Jeremy used methamphetamine not only in my presence, but also when we were both in the presence of others."

What an idiot!  Way to squander your lucky second chance, Mayfield. Hope you have a backup occupation, say goodbye to racing!

You would think Mayfield would try to stay clean after getting the judge to let him back on the track. I guess once you are hooked, you are hooked.Keep him off the track at least until he successfully goes through some rehab or something.

Thank goodness they don’t drug test the nascar fans at the track. The seats would be empty

Why should we believe anything Nascar says?  I’m so sick of the almighty attitude.  What Nascar fails to mention is that Jeremy also had drug tests done that same day at 2 different locations and both came back negative.  If he tested postive again as is stated, why has it taken 9 days for the results to come out?  As far as we know, they went back and used the original sample.  I don’t put a lot of faith in this 2nd Nascar test when they are using the same lab that as listed as a defendant in the lawsuit.  Talk about a conflict of interest!

If Jeremy has used meth for over 7 years (alleged by his so-called “stepmom”), where are his sullen, acne-scarred features, his vacant eyes, and his meth-mouth teeth?

I’ve never heard of a recreational meth user.

If he’s been using for 7+ years, why no positive tests from NA$CAR before this season?

Shouldn’t the courts conduct the tests? Not one of the parties that have a vested interest in this case. If NA$CAR truly wants to be independent, they should have sent the sample out to an independent laboratory not give it to one of the defendents.

Nobody will sponsor him even if he is reinstated.

I’m not buying it.  Why should the Aegis’ tests be credible?  They’re one of the defendants!  He’s passed every independent test since the first “positive” and he would have to be an abject moron to use after the blowup.

Unless it was a GC/MS test, it’s useless.  If I’m misjudging his character, I’ll eat crow later.

But more damaging is an affidavit from (his stepmother) Lisa Mayfield

I don’t think that’s damaging at all based on her history.

Jeremy, it is called re-hab. Your days as a driver are probably over. Kick the meth, get your life in order and come back as either an owner or a consultant.
What ever you decide to do good luck.

Jeremy.. repeat after me…

“I have a problem.. I am asking for privacy for me and my family during this difficult time.  I am entering treatment for my addiction and plan to come back a stronger person.  I apologize for letting my family and fans down.  I hope that once I am well, I will be worthy of a second chance.“

There is a pretty good precedent of forgiving people for their sins.. He needs to man up and just admit the problem and deal with it..
