Tech fells No. 1 UNC 1-0

BLACKSBURG -- Virginia Tech rode a 10-save effort by Kristin Carden to a 1-0 victory over top-ranked North Carolina yesterday. Tech (4-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the ACC, and UNC fell to 3-1 in the league and 10-1-1 overall.

The Hokies got the game's only goal in the 54th minute after UNC goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris was involved in a collision outside the box. Marika Gray scored her fifth goal of the season into an empty goal.

The loss was the first for the Tar Heels against an ACC team since Sept. 30, 2007 when Carolina was beaten 1-0 at Miami.

Wright injures shoulder

OAKLAND, Calif. -- An MRI revealed that Golden State Warriors forward Brandan Wright has damage to the capsule in his left shoulder that will require surgery. No timetable has been set for surgery on the third-year forward. Wright suffered the injury during practice Friday.

Blind Luck wins Oak Leaf Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Blind Luck overtook Always a Princess in the final sixteenth to win the $300,000 Oak Leaf Stakes for 2-year-old fillies and earn an automatic berth in next month's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita. Under Tyler Baze, Blind Luck ran 1 1-16 miles on the synthetic Pro-Ride surface in 1:43.19 to win by 2½ lengths over Always a Princess, the 3-1 favorite. Bickersons was third.

  • Lookin at Lucky took the lead at the top of the stretch and held on to win the $300,000 Norfolk Stakes, earning an automatic berth in next month's Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. The 2-year-old colt improved to 4-0 for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

  • Sea the Stars won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Europe's premier middle-distance horse race in Longchamp, France. The 3-year-old colt won the event ahead of Youmzain and Cavalryman.

Davydenko wins Malaysia Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Top-seededed Nikolay Davydenko defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-5 to win the Malaysia Open. Davydenko extended his record to 6-1 over Verdasco.

  • In Bangkok, Gilles Simon won the Thailand Open, defeating Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-3 for his first ATP title of the year.

Smith, McCoy share medal

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Walker Cup player Nathan Smith and Mike McCoy shared medallist honors in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at The Kiawah Island Club, finishing two rounds of stroke-play qualifying at 3-under 140. Smith, from Pittsburgh, shot a 4-under 68 at Cassique, and McCoy, from West Des Moines, Iowa, had a 1-over 70 on The River Course.

Four share women's medal

OCALA, Fla. -- Mina Hardin shot a 3-under 69 to share medalist honors in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club. Hardin, a reinstated amateur from Fort Worth, Texas, who was the first Mexican player on the LPGA Tour, matched Laura Ladden of Coatesville, Pa.; Jennifer Lucas of Knoxville, Tenn.; and Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, Fla., at 2-over 146.
