Djokovic fells Federer in final
BASEL, Switzerland - Top-ranked Roger Federer lost his hometown tournament yesterday, falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Novak Djokovic in the Swiss Indoors final.
Djokovic earned his fourth title of the season with a victory that ended Federer's run of three straight titles at the tournament where he was once a ballboy.
Djokovic improved to 3-2 this year against Federer.
Italy tops U.S. for Fed Cup
REGGIO CALABRIA, Italy - Italy won its second Fed Cup title in four years, completing a shutout of a U.S. team playing without Venus and Serena Williams.
Flavia Pennetta beat U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin 7-5, 6-2 to give the experienced Italians an insurmountable 3-0 lead over a young United States team in the best-of-five series on an outdoor clay court at the Rocco Polimeni club.
Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci finished the 4-0 victory by beating Liezel Huber and Vania King 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 in doubles. The fourth singles match was scrapped after Italy clinched the title.
The Williams sisters opted not to play after meeting in the season-ending tour championships final last weekend.
- Andy Murray won his sixth title of the season in his first tournament back from a wrist injury, beating Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-2 in the Valencia (Spain) Open final. The fourth-ranked Scot hadn't played since the U.S. Open in September.
- James Blake beat Fabrice Santoro 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the Paris Masters.

Ward could miss four weeks
RALEIGH, N.C. - Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward remained in an Ohio hospital after his leg was cut by a skate, and General Manager Jim Rutherford says he could miss up to four weeks. Ward was expected to remain in Columbus through yesterday and return to Raleigh today for further evaluation.
Ward didn't fly home after the Hurricanes' 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night because of concerns about the stress of the flight on his injury.

Hurt ankle sidelines Parker
SAN ANTONIO - Spurs guard Tony Parker is not expected to play today against Toronto because of a sore left ankle. The Spurs said Parker's injury was a mild sprain that could sideline him for a week. Parker rolled his ankle Friday night in the second quarter of a loss at Portland.

- In Hartford, Conn., Chad Dawson, fighting in his home state, won an unanimous decision Saturday night over an older and slower Glen Johnson to remain undefeated and win the interim WBC light heavyweight title. The 27-year-old Dawson, who vacated his IBF title to fight Johnson for a second time, outboxed his 40-year-old opponent, who was never able to get close enough to land the hard punches that made their first fight in April 2008 tight.
- Tucker Fredricks upset the favored South Koreans to win the 500-meter race for his sixth career speedskating World Cup victory in Berlin. Fredericks clocked 35.06 seconds to edge Lee Kang-seok and Lee Kyou-hyuk, who were both timed in 35.10, with Lee Kang-seok getting second place on a photo finish. There was another American victory when Shani Davis set a course record in winning the 1,500 meters. Davis, the 1,000-meter Olympic champion, covered the distance in 1 minute, 44.47 seconds in the opening meet of the season.

U.Va. falls to Maryland
CHARLOTTESVILLE - The third-ranked and third-seeded Virginia field hockey team fell to top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland 3-2 in overtime in the ACC final. Virginia's Paige Selenski, Inga Stockel and Charlotte van den Broek were named to the all-tournament team.
Sophomore Erin Pardini scored on a penalty kick with 10:15 left to give UNC Wilmington a 1-0 victory over James Madison in the CAA women's soccer final in Brookline, Mass. - From Staff and Wire Reports
