Tsonga ousts Federer in Rogers Cup

MONTREAL - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga upset Roger Federer in the Rogers Cup yesterday, coming back from the brink of elimination in the third set to beat the world's top-ranked player 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-3). Once Federer got a game away from closing out the match, Tsonga broke his serve twice in front of a frenzied crowd at Uniprix Stadium.

The 2008 Australian Open finalist ended Federer's 22-match winning streak and earned a spot in the semifinals against Andy Murray. Tsonga has won two of three career meetings with Murray, who earlier advanced 6-2, 6-4 over Nikolay Davydenko. Murray, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament, made the semifinals for the third time in four years.

Safina ends Clijsters' tourney run

MASON, Ohio - Playing her first tournament in more than two years, Kim Clijsters couldn't keep up with the world's top-ranked player. Dinara Safina repeatedly broke her serve during a 6-2, 7-5 victory to reach the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open and finish Clijsters' uplifting week back on the court. With both Williams sisters gone, Clijsters' return became the talk of the $2 million Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open.

Donovan tests positive for swine flu

CARSON, Calif. - Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan has tested positive for what is believed to be swine flu, and his teammates are taking precautions. Donovan was to be evaluated by a doctor yesterday and today, the team said. His status for the Galaxy's game against Seattle tonight remains unclear. Donovan did not practice yesterday after playing all 90 minutes for the United States in a 2-1 loss to Mexico in World Cup qualifying Wednesday in Mexico City. SI.com first reported his condition Thursday night.

  • D.C. United has acquired defender David Habarugira, a veteran of Burundi's national team. Habarugira worked out with United on a trial basis earlier this summer and will be eligible to play in today's game at Toronto FC. Habarugira will turn 21 tomorrow.

  • Mexico will meet Colombia in an exhibition game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Sept. 30. The match will be part of a doubleheader that opens with FC Dallas hosting New England in a MLS game.

    Phelps to be cited as result of mishap

BALTIMORE - Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was driving with an expired, out-of-state license and told police he drank a beer about an hour and 15 minutes before he was involved in an accident, Baltimore police said. The accident Thursday night was not Phelps' fault, police said, and officers did not administer field sobriety tests because he showed no signs of being impaired by alcohol. But the swimming star will be cited for driving without a license and failure to establish residency in Maryland.

Hall of Famer 'Teeder' Kennedy dies

PORT COLBORNE, Ontario - Ted "Teeder" Kennedy, who captained the Toronto Maple Leafs to five Stanley Cups during a Hall of Fame career, died Friday. He was 83. Mr. Kennedy died of congestive heart failure at a nursing home in his hometown of Port Colborne, son Mark Kennedy said. A five-time all-star center and the 1955 MVP, Mr. Kennedy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966. He finished his career with 231 goals and 329 assists in 696 games. In other NHL news:

  • The Montreal Canadiens have signed right wing Matt D'Agostini to a one-year deal. The 6-0, 200-pound forward had 12 goals and nine assists in 53 games for the Canadiens last season.

    European player dies from gunshot

MILWAUKEE - Lavelle Felton, a player in a German professional basketball league, died yesterday in his hometown from a gunshot wound. Police said Felton, 29, was shot in the head while sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle at a Milwaukee gas station around 2 a.m. Wednesday. He died Thursday about 9:30 p.m. at a local hospital. No arrests have been made, a police spokeswoman said. ELSEWHERE

  • The founder of the online gambling site BetOnSports.com pleaded guilty to federal racketeering conspiracy and other charges, concluding years of investigating and prosecuting a case in the complex world of offshore sports gambling. Gary Kaplan, 50, who started out as a New York bookie, agreed in a plea deal to forfeit $43.6 million in illegally obtained revenue from his criminal enterprise.

  • Villanova guard Reggie Redding has been kicked off the team for the fall semester two weeks after being charged with possession of marijuana. School officials say Redding will remain enrolled in classes and could return to the team in late December if coach Jay Wright and the athletic department approve. Redding started 22 games last season and averaged 7.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists as the Wildcats advanced to the Final Four.

  • Courageous Cat rallied in the stretch to win the $160,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes for 3-year-olds by 1¾ lengths over Sal the Barber on the turf at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Kent Desormeaux rode the Bill Mott-trained Courageous Cat to its third straight victory. He ran 11/8 miles over a firm course in 1:45.90 and earned $96,000 for owners Martin and Pam Wygod.

College football teams are planning to start the season off on a courteous note. As part of a sportsmanship initiative, the American Football Coaches Association and NCAA are encouraging schools to arrange teamwide handshakes on the field before kickoff. - From Wire Reports
