SportsQuest skaters make U.S. team

Kimberly Derrick and Jordan Malone qualified for the 2010 U.S. Olympic Short Track Speed Skating team after competing in the four-day trials in Marquette, Mich., last weekend. Derrick was a 2006 Olympian.

Throughout the event, Derrick and Malone consistently finished on the podium and each won one event. Derrick won the gold medal in the women's 1,000 meters, and Malone won gold in the men's 444 meters. Derrick and Malone each ended the trials ranked third overall. The top five men and women earned a spot on the team.

Sonia Milan placed 11th overall but finished eighth in the women's 1,000 and made a number of top group finals. Derrick, Malone and Milan competed for SportsQuest, which sent six skaters to the trials. Other SportsQuest skaters competing in the trials were Rachel Stewart, Landon Hatfield and Buddy Gurr.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

UConn QB likely out two weeks

STORRS, Conn. - Connecticut quarterback Zach Frazer is expected to miss the next two games with a right knee injury suffered in the Huskies' 12-10 loss to North Carolina. Coach Randy Edsall offered no specifics about the injury but said Frazer will not play Saturday at Baylor and that Cody Endres would start.

Miami-Tech game set for 3:30 p.m.

The ACC said Virginia Tech's Sept. 26 home game against Miami will kick off at 3:30 p.m. The game will be regionally televised on ABC and shown in other parts of the country on ESPN.

ECU's top rusher doubtful

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina may be without leading rusher Dominique Lindsay this weekend when the Pirates visit No. 24 North Carolina. Coach Skip Holtz said Lindsay injured his right shoulder in last week's 35-20 loss at West Virginia and he wasn't hopeful that Dominique will play. Holtz listed Lindsay as doubtful.

  • Vanderbilt lost two starters for the rest of the season to injuries with the worst being senior free safety Ryan Hamilton, who tore a pectoral muscle. Hamilton is a co-captain who started his 34th straight game in last weekend's 23-9 loss at No. 9 LSU. The Commodores also lost starting right tackle James Williams to a dislocated left ankle.

  • Kent State senior running back Eugene Jarvis will miss the rest of the season with a kidney injury. Coach Doug Martin said Jarvis will be hospitalized for about one week and is expected to make a full recovery within two months. Jarvis sustained the injury in the first half of Saturday's 34-7 loss to Boston College.

  • Starting tailback Kendall Hunter is doubtful for No. 16 Oklahoma State's game Saturday against Rice with an injured right leg. Hunter left Oklahoma State's 45-35 loss to Houston in the second quarter.

  • Mississippi coach Houston Nutt said defensive end Greg Hardy is "very doubtful" for Saturday's game with Southeastern Louisiana. Hardy sprained his left ankle in the season-opening 45-14 win at Memphis and it remains swollen and discolored.

  • Pitt sophomore safety Andrew Taglianetti won't play again this season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Buffalo. Because he played in only two games, Taglianetti could receive a medical redshirt that would preserve a season of eligibility. ELSEWHERE

  • The Dallas Mavericks kept forward James Singleton and got rid of guard Greg Buckner. Singleton, a restricted free agent, looked around but decided to stick with Dallas since he already has a year invested in coach Rick Carlisle's system. The 6-8 Singleton showed his versatility by playing every position but point guard last season.

  • Prosecutors rested their case against a Kentucky high school football coach charged with reckless homicide in the death of a player who collapsed at practice last year. A judge denied a request by attorneys for former Pleasure Ridge Park coach Jason David Stinson to dismiss the reckless homicide and wanton endangerment charges. Judge Susan Schultz Gibson said there was enough evidence to let the jury decide the case.
