Wake gives Gaudio extension
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest gave coach Dino Gaudio a contract extension through the 2013-14 season. School officials said in conjunction with the team's preseason media day that Gaudio's deal was extended two more seasons. Details of the contract were not available because the private school generally does not discuss them.
Gaudio has gone 41-20 with one week at No. 1 nationally and one berth in the NCAA tournament.
- Binghamton coach Kevin Broadus has been placed on an indefinite paid leave of absence. Interim Athletic Director James Norris said the decision was reached after discussions with university President Lois DeFleur and Vice President James Van Voorst. Assistant coach Mark Macon will take over in the interim. The move came after Friday's announcement that Broadus admitted having contact with prospective recruits that violated NCAA regulations.

Fans show support for Davies
WASHINGTON -- Fans of the U.S. national team planned to show their support last night for forward Charlie Davies, following an automobile accident that has jeopardized his soccer career. The Baltimore Brigade supporters group encouraged fans to hold up a white card with a black No. 9 -- Davies' jersey number -- during the ninth minute of the U.S. team's World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.
Davies remained in serious but stable condition at Washington Hospital Center Medstar. He will be hospitalized for at least a week and is expected to take six to 12 months to recover, all but ruling him out for the World Cup, which begins in South Africa on June 11.
Davies broke two bones in his right leg and one in his left elbow, and he sustained a lacerated bladder and facial fractures in the accident early Tuesday, which claimed the life of a 22-year-old Maryland woman.
NBA
Brown, Hollins are fined
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Larry Brown became the first major target in the NBA's zero-tolerance policy toward criticizing its replacement referees. The Bobcats coach was hit with $60,000 in fines and the Charlotte organization was fined another $60,000 after Brown's ejection from an exhibition game.
Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins was also fined $25,000 for criticism after a game Monday, as the league attempts to protect its inexperienced officials while it locks out its regular referees in a labor dispute.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
FSU releases documents
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- NCAA documents released yesterday as the result of a news media lawsuit explain the thinking behind a proposal to strip Florida State coaches and athletes of victories for academic cheating -- even those not implicated.
The release also pierces the NCAA's veil of secrecy in disciplinary cases for the first time because of court rulings saying certain documents involving state schools are public records.
Football coach Bobby Bowden is among those who stand to lose wins -- 14 in his case. That would further diminish his already dwindling chances of overtaking Penn State's Joe Paterno, who leads Bowden by four victories as major college football's winningest coach.
Most of the 695-page transcript of an Oct. 18, 2008 hearing by the NCAA's Committee on Infractions is a rehash of information previously made public by the university. It does, though, show the idea of vacating wins is based on the belief an athlete is ineligible from the time he or she committed academic fraud, even though it may not have been discovered until some time later.
Moncur, Phillips likely to miss game
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Defensive end Eric Moncur and safety Randy Phillips are expected to miss No. 9 Miami's game at Central Florida on Saturday night. Both are starters when healthy. Moncur has an injured lower right leg. Phillips has missed Miami's previous two games with an arm injury, plus has not felt well in recent days.
- Georgia defensive back Vance Cuff has been suspended for Saturday's game at Vanderbilt following his arrest on misdemeanor charges, including driving with a suspended license. Cuff was riding a scooter as he left the Georgia football facility on Tuesday and drove down a street which has been closed for construction. He was stopped by University of Georgia police for riding down the closed road, and he was found to be driving with a suspended license.
GYMNASTICS
Bross leads qualifying
LONDON -- Rebecca Bross, who trains at the same gym that produced Olympic champions Carly Patterson and Nastia Liukin, had the best score in qualifying at her first world gymnastics championships. The U.S. athlete finished with 57.4 points, just one-tenth ahead of another newcomer, Romania's Ana Porgras. Australia's Lauren Mitchell was third, and Deng Linlin, a member of China's gold medal team at the Beijing Olympics, finished fourth. U.S. champion Bridget Sloan was fifth after a fall off balance beam.
