U.Va.'s Davis ties school mark in win

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Junior Amory Davis tied the University of Virginia tournament scoring record while winning the North Carolina Greensboro Bridgestone Golf Collegiate title yesterday.

Davis shot 5-under 67 during the final round to win the 54-hole event by one shot at 11-under 205. Davis' total equaled the previous mark set by Jimmy Flippen in 1995, Steve Marino in 2001 and Jeremy Luce in 2003.

Davis 205 also toppled the event's scoring record by a stroke.

Davis helped the Cavaliers to a second-place finish in the 15-team tournament that wrapped up U.Va.'s fall season. Virginia shot 7-under 281 during the final round to complete the tournament at 14-under 850. Georgia Tech finished seven shots ahead of U.Va. to win the team title.

RUNNING

Mentzer wins Marine Corps Marathon

ARLINGTON -- John Mentzer won in his debut at 26.2 miles, taking the 34th annual Marine Corps Marathon by more than 3 minutes. The 33-year-old lieutenant commander in the Navy won in 2 hours, 21 minutes, 47 seconds to beat Air Force Capt. Jacob Johnson.

Muliye Gurme of Ethiopia won the women's race in 2:49:48, taking the lead with about a mile to go to beat Air Force Capt. Jaymee Marty by 25 seconds.

Mentzer took the lead about eight miles in and was in command by the 10th mile. Johnson finished in 2:25:02.

TENNIS

ODU, U.Va. players reach final

BLACKSBURG -- Old Dominion women's player Nadine Fahoum continued to roll at the ITA Women's Atlantic Regional Championships with a pair of victories to advance to today's final. The Monarchs junior will face Virginia's Erin Vierra.

Fahoum, ranked 116th in the nation, beat VCU's Josefin Hjerquist 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, and U.Va.'s Lindsey Hardenbergh 6-3, 6-2. Vierra defeated Richmond's Erin Clark 6-3, 6-0 and Virginia's Jenny Stevens 6-2, 6-3.

The final will determine the regional representative in the ITA National Indoor Championships during Nov. 5-8 at Yale.

U.Va. duo wins doubles title

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia's Houston Barrick and Sanam Singh won the ITA Atlantic Regional doubles title, and the Cavaliers had a pair of players advance to the singles final. In the doubles final, Barrick and Singh beat U.Va.'s Drew Courtney and Lee Singer 8-4. In singles, all the semifinalists were U.Va. players. Singh beat Singer 7-5, 6-1, and Jarmere Jenkins topped Barrick by the same score. The singles final will be be played at a later time.

  • Mikhail Youzhny beat Janko Tipsarevic and Francesca Schiavone defeated Olga Govortsova to win Kremlin Cup titles in Moscow. Youzhny won 6-7 (7-5), 6-0, 6-4 to earn his fifth career title and extend Russia's winning streak at the event to six years. Schiavone won her second career title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

  • Marcos Baghdatis beat Olivier Rochus 6-1, 7-5, winning the Stockholm Open for his third career ATP Tour singles title.

ELSEWHERE

  • In Makena, Hawaii, Olympic triathletes Eneko Llanos of Spain and defending champ Julie Dibens of England won the XTERRA World Championship, a triathlon that combines a mile ocean swim with 20 miles of mountain biking and a 7-mile run over lava and sand. Llanos, 32, finished in 2 hours, 37 minutes, 22 seconds -- 55 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Nicolas Lebrun of France. The 34-year-old Dibens had a time of 2 hours, 56 minutes, 42 seconds, beating runner-up Lesley Paterson of Scotland by more than seven minutes.

You Go West Girl and Banrock won the $150,000 closing-day features on the turf for New York-breds at Belmont Park. You Go West Girl dominated the Ticonderoga for fillies and mares, beating Love Cove by three lengths. Jose Lezcano was aboard for trainer Tom Proctor as the 5-year-old captured a second-straight state-bred stakes, improving to 8 for 21 overall. You Go West Girl ran the 11/8 miles on the rain-softened course in 1:53.53, paying $15 to win. Banrock beat Gimme Credit by one length in the Mohawk for his 12th win in 30 races. Javier Castellano rode for trainer Tom Bush as Banrock, a 6-year-old, covered the 11/8 miles in 1:52.66. -- From Staff and Wire Reports
