Ross, Anderson fall in VSGA Women’s Amateur quarterfinals

DANVILLE -- Lauren Greenlief has earned the opportunity to pull off a rare double in state women's golf.

Greenlief, an 18-year-old from Oakton, won two matches yesterday in the Virginia State Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship at Danville Golf Club and advanced to today's final match.

Greenlief, the reigning State Women's Stroke Play champion, meets tournament medalist Whitney Neuhauser, 21, of Barboursville in today's scheduled 18-hole final.

Vicki Valentine was the last player to win the Stroke Play and State Amateur titles in the same year (1991).

Neuhauser, a rising senior at the University of Virginia, eliminated past State Junior Girls winner Hunter Ross, 19, of Manakin-Sabot 2 and 1 in the morning quarterfinals. She defeated Elizabeth Brightwell, 18, of Nellysford by the same score in the afternoon semifinals.

Brightwell knocked off 13-year-old Lyberty Anderson of Chesterfield 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals.

Greenlief's 2 and 1 quarterfinal win came over 16-year-old Hannah Pierce of King George. Her semifinal match with Sara Hurwitch, 20, of Potomac Falls went to the 19th hole before Greenlief triumphed.

Vardaman, Cain win final matches

HOT SPRINGS Jack Vardaman of Hot Springs and Williamsburg's Harry Cain scored victories in yesterday's Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior state championship matches at The Homestead's Cascades Course.

Vardaman, 69, registered a 1-up victory over Earlysville's Donald Robertson to claim the 65-69 age division. Cain posted a 5 and 4 triumph over Roanoke's Bill Shrader to win the 70-and-over category.
