Sixth option for baseball team nickname is on the way
The search for Richmond's new baseball team's nickname is taking a twist. The process was expanded this afternoon to make room for a sixth entry. Chuck Domino, chief executive manager for the franchise, said CNBC unexpectedly expressed interest in identifying a wild-card candidate. Darren Rovell, CNBC's sports business reporter, said his company wanted "to get our readers, on cnbc.com, involved in the process."
Domino said he welcomed the national exposure and believes it will make the process "more interesting." To submit an entry, e-mail on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CNBC will choose its wild-card suggestion tomorrow morning. Rovell projected that CNBC would receive about 200 submissions.
"Someone could say 'There are five ideas from Richmond and now you're going to throw in something else and then that could win, and that's not part of our heritage,'" Rovell said. "I think people can make that case, and I understand that. But I think there's also the case that can be made that maybe there is some other name out there, when you expand the base of people, that could be a cooler name."
Said Domino: "I like the [candidates] we have, but I'm open to a sixth one. Maybe it will blow us away."
The five finalists chosen by the front office after accepting more than 6,000 submissions are the Flatheads, Flying Squirrels, Hambones, Rock Hoppers and Rhinos. -- John O'Connor

If the new ownership of a new baseball team in Richmond really wants to establish a loyal local fan base then they’ve got to get serious about naming the team. Names like Rhinos and Flatheads etc… are a joke and as such Virginians will be reluctant to get behind the team and spend money at the games. It’s fine to be all about fun and good times but the team won’t be taken seriously with some sort of half baked lousy name. The natural fit would be something like the Rebels or the Generals and even the Statesmen wouldn’t be bad. This team had also better get used to playing at Parker Field(The Diamond) because it will be a permanent home. I remember going to the R-Braves games when I was a kid with my dad and it was the best! We’d go by Bill’s Barbecue after the game for dinner and the concession food at Parker Field was tops! It was just a great time back then but now it’s risky to even be in that part of town with all the crime and drugs there. I got it!! The name team name can be the Richmond Robbers !! Now that really does fit with the progressive times!!
Hush Puppies? OOOO Please! Give it a rest!
The NUTS
Richmond Relics…..COOL…..from some of these posts we can tell this village is full of boring, old gray hairs, who are stuck in the past heritage….I’m glad I made it to the half-century mark with a sense of humor in tack….bring on goofy and quirky…..Domino and Parnell: stay your course - these posters don’t know what they want…you guys are marketing professionals ....these posters are clueless newbies….and don’t listen to Paul Woody - he’s making a lame, calculated attempt to fill the cynical, critical Crocs of Bob Lipper. And he was wrong about the Boulevard being the long term solution for a Ballpark (Manchester is the deal!)
Power to the Opposite Field,
Cabbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbage
Ziggy—-you are a pathetic loser. I am still partial to the Richmond Rapids. We are one of the few large cities in the country to have such amazing rapids running through the city proper. It doubles as meaning we are fast and the alliteration is terrific.

I sent in a lot of names for the 6th submission. Among them River Raptors (birds near the water, Clay Cutters (Virginia red clay, also on the diamond), CopperHeads, Lunkers (Large Fish), Bluebacks, Bullheads, River Rattlers, Water Mocassins, Timber Rattlers, Sphinx (type of moth, Edgar Allen Poe poem) Rail Splitters, BronzeBacks (Nickname for Bass), Cat Birds, RiverSnails… plenty more Let me know what you think
Ok, call me cynical, but we’re supposed to believe that Darren Rovell and CNBC just happened to “want to get our readers on cnbc.com, involved in the process”??
C’mon. This thing’s been staged from the get go. They know what they want to call this team, yet they come to town telling us that our team and they are just the caretakers.
Domino and his group have gotten what they wanted. Everyone’s talking about this now. Whether they buy it or not is another story.
The Richmond Blue Cats. It’s also a catfish found in the James. Has a cool factor. Sounds better than The Flatheads. Great logo and mascot potential.
The Cannons.
The Rocks.
Both are better than the 5 finalist in my opinion. I do this for a living. Try hitting a Cannon ball. Etc. Cannons have connections to Richmond’s history. Has attitude. The Rocks: drop “Hoppers”. Easier to say. Has attitude. Richmond Rocks has creative potential. You still have the connection to the James River and thus to Richmond.
