Griffey retirement is no sure thing

There may never again be such a good time for Ken Griffey Jr. to call it a career.

He's about to turn 40, clearly way past his prime and in demand only by the nostalgic. But that doesn't mean he's going to walk away after the dramatic way he finished the season a week ago, delivering three home runs in the Mariners' season-ending homestand and a single in his final at-bat.

Baseball is still fun for Griffey, and it is likely he'll get an offer to reprise the designated/pinch-hitter role for Seattle in 2010. Such a development would permit him to add to his total of 630 home runs, fifth all-time.

When Griffey was asked if he wanted to play in 2010, he answered honestly. "Um, yeah," he said, before adding qualifiers about what's best for his family and the Mariners.

Phillies' Moyer still hospitalized

DENVER -- Phillies left-hander Jamie Moyer is recovering at a Philadelphia hospital from a blood infection.

Moyer's wife, Karen, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press yesterday that her 46-year-old husband is fine now after an infection following abdominal surgery.

Moyer was expected to stay another night at the hospital. He had surgery last week on tendons in his left groin and lower abdomen.

Moyer went 12-10 with a 4.94 ERA in 30 appearances this season.

New trial date in Adenhart case

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- The trial of a man charged with driving drunk and killing Los Angeles pitcher Nick Adenhart has been delayed for six months at the request of his new defense attorney.

On Friday, Superior Court Judge Richard Toohey rescheduled the trial for 22-year-old Andrew Thomas Gallo to April 19, 2010, to give Deputy Public Defender Bryan Harris time to prepare a defense. Harris was appointed after Gallo's private attorney quit the case.
