Baseball: Cubs’ new owner makes big promise
Cubs' new owner makes big promise
CHICAGO -- The new owner of the Chicago Cubs didn't wait long to make a promise: Tom Ricketts says the Cubs are going to win the World Series.
Of course, the Cubs haven't won it all since 1908 and haven't even been to the series since 1945. But Ricketts and other family members were upbeat as they were introduced at a news conference yesterday at Wrigley Field.
He says there is no "magic bullet" to win but consistent talent will get the Cubs to the top.
Ricketts also says there are plans to improve Wrigley Field but also preserve the feel of the storied ballpark on Chicago's North Side.
GIANTS: Freddy Sanchez has signed a two-year contract extension with San Francisco. Terms of the deal were not announced but the Giants held an $8.1 million option for 2010 for the three-time all-star second baseman. Sanchez was acquired from Pittsburgh on July 29 in exchange for a minor league pitcher.
BLUE JAYS: Manager Cito Gaston has signed a four-year consulting contract with the team that will begin when his managerial deal expires at the end of the 2010 season. Gaston is expected to advise the team in all areas, including spring training, minor league operations and scouting.
Also, pitching coach Brad Arnsberg is leaving Toronto to take the same job with the Houston Astros. He will be replaced by former bullpen coach Bruce Walton. Hitting coach Gene Tenace is retiring. Former first base coach Dwayne Murphy will assume Tenance's role. -- From Wire Reports
