Short hops Tigers RH Edwin Jackson threw 115 pitches in four innings in Friday's loss to the Indians. No pitcher since 1988 threw as many pitches as Jackson did without pitching into the fifth inning. The closest was Cardinals LH Darren Oliver, who threw 121 pitches in four-plus innings on June 19, 1999. Nineteen of Oliver's pitches came without retiring a batter in the fifth. LH Cliff Lee had a dazzling debut for the Phillies on Friday, pitching a four-hitter vs. the Giants. The complete game was his third in four starts, and he threw 78 of his 108 pitches for strikes. OF Matt Holliday is the first Cardinal to hit in his first eight games with the team since Roger Maris in 1967. Holliday is 17 for 29 (.586) since being acquired from the Athletics. Garrett Jones, with 10 home runs, became the first Pirate to lead the majors for a month since Willie Stargell hit 11 in April, 1971.
