In the first game, Fausto Carmona pitched seven strong innings to lead the Indians. RAYS 5, ORIOLES 3: James Shields carried a shutout into the eighth, Ben Zobrist hit a three-run homer and Tampa Bay extended Baltimore's losing skid to 13. Shields allowed three runs and six hits. BLUE JAYS 12, RED SOX 0: Roy Halladay pitched a three-hitter for his second consecutive shutout and Toronto sent Boston to its sixth straight loss. The Red Sox started only two regulars. TIGERS 7, TWINS 2: Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run double and Detroit beat Minnesota to move closer to the AL Central title. Eddie Bonine pitched five effective innings after getting off to a rough start. NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUPPIRATES 4, CUBS 0: Charlie Morton pitched a four-hitter to lead Pittsburgh over Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader. Morton, a 25-year-old right-hander, also set a career high with eight strikeouts. NATIONALS 7, METS 4: Justin Maxwell's grand slam off Francisco Rodriguez with two outs in the ninth lifted Washington over New York. Maxwell drove a full-count pitch from the all-star closer. REDS 6, CARDINALS 1: Laynce Nix hit a grand slam off John Smoltz, Bronson Arroyo pitched into the ninth and Cincinnati beat St. Louis.
