Thanks for the good drama laughs Richmond and whomever said Hambones was racist, but didn’t mention a thing about Hushpuppies.
I’m just here for work this week, and caught the hubub on the Radio.
Did anyone realize or consider that hushpuppies is a word with its roots in slavery as well??
In the south it is said that the term Hushpuppies came from when the slaves were returning into the homes of their masters carrying food recently prepared in the outdoor kitchens would throw the batter balls to the barking dogs, telling the “puppies” to “hush.“
Also… During the underground railroads, escaping slaves would feed these to the dogs trac
There is also the black dog in Hollywood Cemetery. I think that name would get some major protests.
I know the votes are in and we’ll find out the new name tomorrow, but I would have voted for the Richmond “Black Dogs” - after the beloved Black Dog who roamed Richmond up until his demise this year. That would have been something personal and pertaining only to Richmond!
Geez. Name the team after—what the bleep is a hush puppie made of, anyway?
Let’s just name the team the Okras. Makes as much sense as Hush Puppies.
I’ve read all the posts and looked at all the corny names. And Wanna-Bees is as corny as any and certainly is true of the intent of the players!
biker, true. But I think the Richmond people will buy more caps and shirts if it was a name the makes us proud.
im not sure why my comments were yanked, they had no foul language, nor were they really that tetromental any one,so ill try again. im old enough to remember yhe ric. colts playing on mayo island. then came the yankees in 54, balt. eas given a major league team and we were awarded a aaa franchise. ican still remember the big parades down broad st. Mickey Mantle,Whitey Ford, and of course Casey Stengel. we had teams with names like the bisons, royals, reds, and of course the Havana sugar kings. the point being team names are nothing more than names. we,ve had the colts, vees, braves, and whatever our new name will be,and if you like baseball ,you will support them even if they have a silly name they still have to put on the uniform and play.im not real fond of any of the names picked, but i say play ball!
The name I submitted ; ( THE RICHMOND SQUIRES )
historical definition- A young nobleman acting as an attendant to a Knight before becoming a Knight himself ! ie…A, AA, AAA leaguers trying to make it to the MAJOR leagues. Yeah, years ago there was a BASKETBALL team called the “VIRGINIA SQUIRES”. But that was then and this is now. I guess (SQUIRES) is not corny enough. (SQUIRES) kinda compliments the swashbuckling (Va. Cavaliers ) too.
How about the Dittoheads?
Rush Limbaugh would make a great mascot.
I vote for rockin rhino’s!!!! rockin for music which Richmond has alot of or rockin for the river. Catches it all. Instead of cheese heads, we can have horn heads
