Jamison out with injury

WASHINGTON - Antawn Jamison's ailing shoulder will keep him off the court well into the regular season.
The Washington Wizards announced an estimated recovery time for Jamison's injury yesterday, saying he's likely to miss the first eight to 13 games.
The two-time all-star forward partially dislocated his shoulder trying to block a shot against Cleveland on Oct. 14. The Wizards originally ruled him out for the rest of the preseason until the injury could be re-evaluated this week.
Team President Ernie Grunfeld said doctors have had a chance to look at the shoulder again and that Jamison is expected to be out three to five weeks.
Iverson 'long shot' for opener
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Memphis Grizzlies guard Allen Iverson says he feels no pain in his left hamstring but says it's a "long shot" that he'll play in Wednesday's season opener against Detroit.
Iverson (Hampton) joined the Grizzlies in Charlotte on Thursday and worked out before yesterday's exhibition game. Iverson says he can run and cut without difficulty, but he's not been cleared to play by the training staff because of fears he may re-injure the leg.
Iverson, 34, has been out since he tore his hamstring in a scrimmage Oct. 4. While Wednesday's game against his former Detroit team is one he'd like to play, he says he wants to be smart about the injury. He didn't think he would miss many regular-season games.
Aldridge remains with Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. - With forward LaMarcus Aldridge's contract extension, the Portland Trail Blazers solidified the core of their team for the next five years. During the summer, the Blazers signed guard Brandon Roy to a five-year extension. On Thursday, they did the same with Aldridge.
Both players were brought in by the Blazers through draft-day trades in 2006, as Portland distanced itself from the so-called "Jail Blazers" era.
With the Oct. 31 deadline looming, the Blazers needed to strike a deal with Aldridge or he would have become a restricted free agent next summer. Aldridge signed a deal that with incentives could pay him nearly $70 million.
Elsewhere
- The Chicago Bulls held Derrick Rose out of their preseason finale against Washington because of a nagging ankle injury. The NBA's reigning rookie of the year, Rose has an inflamed tendon behind his right ankle. He expects to be ready for the season opener against San Antonio on Thursday. The Bulls also held out guards Kirk Hinrich (left elbow) and Jannero Pargo (lower back).
- The Utah Jazz say forward Kyle Korver will have surgery on his left knee and will miss the beginning of the regular season. Korver has been bothered by inflammation in his left knee and has appeared in just one preseason game. He had two points and three rebounds against Real Madrid on Oct. 8.
- The Houston Rockets waived guard Brent Barry, a move that trims their roster to the required 15 players. The 6-7 Barry signed as a free agent with the Rockets before last season and averaged 3.7 points and 1.4 assists in 56 games.
- The Minnesota Timberwolves have waived veteran guard Antonio Daniels. He was acquired from New Orleans in September in a cost-saving move. The Timberwolves gave permission to Daniels to seek a trade and did not play him in the preseason. The Wolves have a similar agreement with veteran center Mark Blount, who will be waived if no trade is completed before rosters are set Monday.
- The Oklahoma City Thunder waived forward Mike Harris, trimming the roster to 15 players before the start of the regular season. Harris' departure means veteran forward Ryan Bowen essentially won a four-man competition for Oklahoma City's vacant roster spot.
