No winner for Skins’ No. 3 QB job
Published: September 6, 2009
ASHBURN -- The winner between the ex-Heisman Trophy contenders battling for the Washington Redskins third-string quarterback job? Try "none of the above."
The Redskins placed Colt Brennan on injured reserve with hip and hamstring injuries, and his competition for the job, Chase Daniel, was one of the final cuts yesterday as the team reduced its roster to 53 for the regular season.
Kicker Shaun Suisham was one of the survivors, getting a chance to stick for another season after fending off a challenge from Dave Rayner. It was a competition with few highlights: The Redskins tried only four field goals in preseason, and Rayner's only attempt was a 25-yarder.
Brennan aggravated a nagging hamstring problem in Thursday night's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he's also been battling a previously undisclosed hip injury.
Eagles put Vick on exempt list, keep Feeley
PHILADELPHIA -- The Eagles placed quarterback Michael Vick on the exempt/commissioner's permission list and cut 17 players to get to the mandatory 53-man limit.
Philadelphia kept A.J. Feeley as their No. 3 quarterback.
Vick, a former Virginia Tech star, will not be reinstated until the third game of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs. He will not be able to practice with the team until he is placed on the roster.
Bills release Rhodes
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Veteran running back Dominic Rhodes was released by the Buffalo Bills, who shook up their offense a day after firing coordinator Turk Schonert.
The move was considered a surprise as Rhodes was expected to serve as a primary backup to Fred Jackson to open the season while starter Marshawn Lynch serves an NFL-imposed three-game suspension.
The Bills also released tight end Jonathan Stupar (Virginia).
Giants cut Tyree
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Super Bowl hero David Tyree has been released by the New York Giants.
Tyree made one of the most remarkable catches in Super Bowl history about 19 months ago when the Giants defeated the previously unbeaten New England Patriots.
With the Giants trailing 14-10 late in the fourth quarter, Tyree hauled in a 32-yard pass from Eli Manning, pinning the ball against his helmet as defender Rodney Harrison yanked him to the ground. It set up Manning's game-winning touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress.
Tyree battled injuries in training camp.
Linebacker Michael Boley was placed on reserve while serving a one-game suspension handed down by the NFL. He cannot return to the Giants' training facility until Sept. 14, the day after the opener against Washington.
Dallas keeps Ogletree
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Former Virginia wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, an undrafted rookie, earned the No. 5 receiver spot for the Dallas Cowboys. Ogletree's success made Isaiah Stanback and Jesse Holley expendable, and they were among 22 cuts. Dallas also put rookie linebacker Stephen Hodge on injured reserve.
Raiders let Garcia go
ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Quarterback Jeff Garcia, who was signed by Oakland in the offseason to push JaMarcus Russell and serve as a mentor, was let go by the Raiders. The decision eans Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye will head into the regular season as Russell's backups.
Harper, Peerman cut
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Former Virginia Tech wide receiver Justin Harper and former Virginia running back Cedric Peerman were among the Baltimore Ravens' cuts.
The Ravens also informed kicker Steve Hauschka that he's the new starting kicker replacing Matt Stover, and traded defensive back Derrick Martin to the Green Bay Packers for offensive lineman Tony Moll.
Bengals cut Blackstock
CINCINNATI -- Linebacker Darryl Blackstock (Virginia) and safety Marvin White were cut by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals also put receiver Antonio Chatman on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season.
Blackstock started four games last season and played in eight others. He was suspended four games by the NFL for using a nutritional supplement that contained a banned substance.
Carriker goes on IR
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Rams put defensive tackle Adam Carriker on injured reserve with a shoulder injury from the preseason finale.
Rookie Keith Null won the third-string quarterback job over Brock Berlin, who was waived. The contracts of wide receivers Ronald Curry (Hampton, North Carolina) and Tim Carter were terminated.
Niners drop Green
SAN FRANCISCO -- Veteran cornerback Eric Green (Virginia Tech) was among 20 players cut by the 49ers to get their roster down to 53, the odd man out in a deep and experienced secondary.
Veteran receiver Arnaz Battle, whose status was uncertain when training camp began, made the team.
Seattle to add Milloy?
SEATTLE -- Veteran safety Lawyer Milloy is expected to sign with Seattle, a homecoming for the 13-year NFL veteran who played the past three seasons in Atlanta. No contract terms were available on Milloy's agreement.
Meanwhile, cornerback Marcus Trufant will miss the first six games for Seahawks. Trufant, a Pro Bowl selection in 2007, has not practiced since before training camp because of a disk issue in his back. He begins the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list.
Nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones is not on the PUP list even though he recently had his second knee surgery in eight months. That indicates the Seahawks believe the 35-year-old can return sooner than six weeks from now.
Chiefs drop Thomas
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas was released by the Kansas City Chiefs after failing to appear in any preseason games. Other players cut included Bernard Pollard, who started the past two years at safety, and veteran wide receiver Ashley Lelie.
Saints acquire Thomas
METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints acquired tight end David Thomas from the New England Patriots in exchange for a seventh-round draft choice in 2011.
New England selected the 6-3, 248-pound Thomas out of Texas in the third round of the 2006 draft. He has started 13 games, including 10 last season.
Jones goes on IR
CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears placed running back Kevin Jones (Virginia Tech) on injured reserve after he tore ligaments in his left ankle in the preseason-finale against Cleveland on Thursday.
Chicago activated cornerback Charles Tillman from the PUP list, making him eligible to play in the season opener at Green Bay. Tillman missed training camp and did not appear in any of the four preseason games after undergoing back surgery.
The Bears terminated the contract of cornerback Rod Hood after he signed a one-year deal earlier in the week.
Elsewhere
- Rex Grossman earned a spot on the Houston Texans' final roster and a chance to be the team's backup quarterback. Grossman missed most of the preseason with a hamstring injury. He returned Friday night to throw two touchdown passes in Houston's 27-20 win over Tampa Bay and survive the last round of cuts.
The Texans released 22 players, including quarterback Alex Brink and cornerbacks Mark Parson (Monacan High) and Deltha O'Neal.
- Browns running back Jamal Lewis survived and was not among the 23 cuts made by first-year Cleveland coach Eric Mangini. Lewis, who has already eclipsed 10,000 career yards, was believed to be in danger of making the Browns' opening-week roster. But the 30-year-old will open the season as Cleveland's starting running back.
The Browns cut linebacker Beau Bell, a fourth-round pick in 2008, and terminated the contract of wide receiver David Patten, who won three Super Bowl titles with New England.
- The Patriots acquired tight end Michael Matthews from the Giants for a conditional pick and released linebacker Paris Lenon (Richmond).
- Carolina placed Corvey Irvin on injured reserve and waived fellow defensive tackle Marlon Favorite. Irvin was Carolina's third-round pick. He hurt his knee in Thursday's final preseason game.
- John David Booty made a poor throw at the worst possible time. A day after he threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown in the preseason finale against Dallas, Booty was cut by the Minnesota Vikings, leaving the team with Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels behind starter Brett Favre. Undrafted rookie center Jon Cooper (Virginia) made the team.
- Quarterback Joey Harrington and veteran defensive end Paul Spicer were cut by New Orleans. Chip Vaughn, a 2009 fourth-round draft choice; veteran tight end Billy Miller; and fullback Olaniyi Sobomehin all were placed on injured reserve, ending their seasons.
