NORFOLK — Suspended NFL Star Michael Vick is leaving a job with a Virginia construction company to work with youngsters at Boys & Girls Clubs.

Steven Kast, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, says Vick will be working with children on health and fitness activities at several clubs in the Hampton Roads area. Vick was a regular at the Boys & Girls Club in Newport News as a youngster.

Vick needed a job to meet the conditions of his probation and had been working as a $10-an-hour laborer.

Vick, whose lawyers were in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Norfolk on Tuesday, is in house arrest for the last two months of a nearly two-year sentence for operating a dogfighting ring.

His lawyers say a new bankruptcy plan gives creditors more of his future earnings.

so if vick has paid his dues then why should others who have committed crimes (but paid their dues) have it held against them on a background check for a job? seems like special treatment for vick to me.

Several convicted felons have went on to jobs and normal life without remorse who says you have to be remorseful or be a role model? I could care less if Mike is remorseful he paid his debt through the court system and that is good enough for me if the NFL wants him back more power to him and the NFL. I cant understand what more people want from the guy.

Maybe Vick can teach the kids about dogfighting, or better yet give them English lessons.

dubiousthoughts,

Thats the kind of attitude that makes the commish of nfl not want him back. He’s tired of the bad publicty and if Vick is still being Vick he’s not worth the headache. Owe me an apology? No, I could care less about him, his career, or his future. But, if he wants back, and prob will not be let back, he will have to publicly say he’s sorry. Duh!

Citycynic,

Vick does not owe an apology to “you the fan” or “joe public”. It is up to the criminal justice system to deem whether he has shown remorse and paid society it’s debt. They gave him 18 months and 2 months home confinement with the stipulation he get a job. If they were so concerned about where he worked, they would’ve just given him community service and he could have worked at the SPCA. As far as his bankruptcy, he is not doing anything anyone else facing bankruptch would do. People like Trump have filed Bankruptcy and they worked the system while paying back debt. The system is designed to get you to pay and still retain some income, not take all you have and put you on the street.

If I thought for a minute Vick was doing anyting for the “common good”, I’d agree with you. But this latest stunt is nothing more than a ploy to get his bankruptcy propsal accepted.

You say we’ll never know if he’s remorseful. A start would be for him to say so. But not once has he shown the slightest remorse for what he did. And in part because he’s remained silent, dogfighting is still “big” and he’s still HUGE in Hampton, as you point out, among kids and punks who still idolize him because he’ll probably makes millions palying ball again one day.

Vick could give a rip about these kids. But even if he did, he doesn’t deserve the job over other applicants without rap sheets.

Citycynic,

Vick has paid his dues. He went to prison on terms agreeable to the Feds. If he got favoritism at the BG club to be employed, that’s the American way. I am sure you received some favoritism in your life, at least once. We will never know whether Vick is remourseful. Obviously, he will say and do the right things. The only test is to let him resume his life and wait and see. There are worse crimes than this that convicts get far less punishment. Think of Mafioso killers who turn state’s evidence and get a new face and witness protection, or hackers who defraud millions that end up working for the Feds to catch other hackers. If people have a skill that can be used for the common good, it is useful to employ them to use that influence they might have to possible reach other potential criminals. Dog fighting is big. Just last week someone got caught in Richmond. Google the article. If Vick can reach the youth to prevent this illegal sport it is a good thing.

If this had been anyone else, a mandatory background check would have excluded them from hire. If there were other applicants I hope they sue on the grounds of discrimination and inequitable application of policy. Of course, there may be no other applicants because more than likely the B&G Club created special job for Vick.

Once again a punk who has yet to take accountability for his crime is revered by idiots and gets a break. Hope it was worth it to the B&G Club, whose credibility is now shot and will probably see their charitable donations suffer as a result. The shame is that once again Vick won’t suffer; in this case children and legitimate employees will.

I agree dubiousthoughts.  Not everyone likes to kick a man while he is down.  I have faith in him that he is going to be okay & use his fall from grace to help others, just like i had faith that his dogs could be rehabilitated.  I did see the special, Jim, and it was heartbreaking to say the least, but I believe he deserves a 2nd chance and wish him the best and pray he can enrich someones life from his own mistakes.

Did anyone see the National Geographic documentary “Saving the Michael Vick Dogs?“ It revealed how extremely cruel Vick and associates really were. Anyone who can treat animals that way will easily treat humans the same.  He should not be around children and he did not get what he deserved.
