Torn ACL sidelines Senft for rest of season

For the second time in a month, the Richmond Renegades have lost one of their top players, and this time, regular goaltender Ryan Senft won't be back.

Senft suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Friday's 10-4 victory over Fayetteville. A magnetic resonance imaging test Monday revealed the damage.

Senft, who was 6-6-0 with a 3.42 goals-against average, won't play any more this season. He suffered the injury when a player fell on his knee in the crease. He's expected to have surgery within 10 days.

"What's next?" said coach Brian Goudie, who watched defenseman Dan Vandermeer go down at the end of October with a broken arm and dislocated shoulder.

"Losing two major components of your team is tough; the goaltender and the best defenseman in the league. It puts a damper on everything, but you've to keep trucking along. We've got a couple of big games this weekend and we've got to be ready to go."

Richmond (8-8-0), which has won three consecutive, will entertain Columbus (4-8-2) on Friday and Saturday at the Coliseum. Game time is 7:35 p.m.

Goudie said Bryce Luker, who was in the nets for Saturday's 5-3 win over Twin City, and Adam Dekker, signed as an emergency backup, would share the duties for the time being. Dekker played four years at Utica College in New York, before spending three games with the Wichita Thunder (Central League) at the end of last season.

Pernula, Kubaliak no longer on roster

In addition to Senft, the Renegades are missing two more players. Center Nick Pernula was signed by Bakersfield (East Coast League) and defenseman Jozef Kubaliak was placed on team suspension.

Pernula, who had been with the team for only a couple of weeks, had two goals and six assists in four games. Kubaliak played in all three games last weekend after recovering from a broken hand in training camp.

"The last three games, I tried to put him on the ice a few times and he didn't want to go," Goudie said of Kubaliak. "He told me, 'Your team is too good. Your defensemen are too good. You don't need me here.' If he's got it in his head that he doesn't want to be here, that my guys are too good for him, then I want guys who want to be here. That's the bottom line."

Goudie still has six defensemen and plans to bring in another forward by this weekend to take Pernula's spot.

Vandermeer also was placed on 30-day injured reserve for the second time, meaning he won't be eligible to return until at least the first of January.

Rollins receives player of week honor

Forward Geoff Rollins was the Southern Professional Hockey League's player of the week after getting five goals and two assists in three games since signing with the club last week.

His goals -- four on the power play -- have come on 11 shots for a success ratio of .455. -- John Packett
