RENEGADES NOTES
Winless on the road, Richmond can't score
The Richmond Renegades continue to struggle with a pair of disturbing trends that will keep them from becoming contenders in the Southern Professional Hockey League unless they're corrected.
In every one of their 13 games, the Renegades (5-8-0) have failed to score the first goal. In fact, over the past two games, Richmond hasn't scored at all.
Richmond is also winless on the road, going 0-6-0 away from the Coliseum.
"I don't understand why," coach Brian Goudie said of the road woes. "Every rink we go into, we outshoot them and outplay them, but that doesn't win you games. Guys just have to bear down and put their chances in the net. Hopefully, we'll score first one time this year.
"That [not scoring first] puts wear and tear on you. Every time they score a goal, then if they get a power play two minutes later, it puts that much more pressure on you to not give up that second one. When we get the lead, we're a totally different team."
The Renegades are back on the road again tonight (7:30) for a Thanksgiving meeting with Fayetteville, before returning to the Coliseum tomorrow (7:35) to open a five-game homestand vs. the FireAntz.
"Something's got to break sooner or later," Goudie said. "We've either got to get that first goal or get that first win on the road. We just can't keep going like this."
Scoreless streak mounting for Gades
Dating to Richmond's last goal -- Matt Larke's rebound score at 13:26 of the third period against Huntsville last Friday -- the Renegades have gone 126:34 without turning on the red light.
Richmond defeated the Havoc 3-1 before drawing blanks against Twin City and Knoxville the next two nights.
"We played unbelieveable Friday night and then all of a sudden, guys must have thought they won the Stanley Cup or something," Goudie said. "Saturday, we couldn't beat a midget team."
The Renegades are averaging only 2.8 goals, next-to-last in the league.
Rollins, Kubaliak are added to roster
There will be a couple of new faces on the ice this weekend, as Goudie tries to find the right combination of players.
Left wing Geoff Rollins, who played six games (two goals) for Bloomington (International League) this season before being released, has joined the roster. So has defenseman Jozef Kubaliak, who has recovered from a broken hand suffered in training camp.
Rollins split time between Jacksonville and Twin City last season, accounting for 11 goals and 27 points in 37 games. The 26-year-old had 30 goals and 66 points in 50 games for Pee Dee (SPHL) in 2006-07.
To make room on the roster, Goudie waived forwards John Geverd and Nate Bostic. Richmond also activated forward Chase Tippin from 30-day injured reserve and released him. Tippin got into two fights and suffered a dislocated shoulder. --John Packett
