Yomby William, a standout member of a Richmond Kickers defense that led USL-2 in fewest goals allowed during the regular season, was honored yesterday as USL-2's defender of the year.
William, a 6-4, 28-year-old from Cameroon, has appeared in 19 of the Kickers' 21 USL-2 matches, 18 as a starter. He played a central role, literally and figuratively, for a Kickers club that has allowed but 18 goals to USL-2 foes. William, who joined the Kickers prior to the 2009 season after spending 2008 with the Puerto Rico Islanders of USL-1, was named on seven occasions to the USL-2 team of the week.
Regular-season champion Wilmington collected the other two major awards: most valuable player (forward Jamie Watson) and coach of the year (David Irving). Watson captured the league's regular-season scoring championship with 12 goals and six assists. Irving steered the Hammerheads to the first regular-season championship in the club's 14-year history.
Richmond's Matthew Delicate, the league's regular-season goal-scoring champion (13) was a finalist for most valuable player distinction. Kickers coach Leigh Cowlishaw was a finalist for coach of the year. -- Vic Dorr Jr.
