Collegiate's Meeks passes two milestones

-- The winter sports seasons have been good for Collegiate's Dominique Meeks.

A multitalented, 5-9 senior, Meeks scored the 1,000th point of her varsity basketball career in Collegiate's 52-50 League of Independent Schools victory over St. Gertrude on Monday night. She scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.

She began the season with 898 points and is averaging 17.1 for the unbeaten Cougars (7-0), who knocked off another local rival, St. Catherine's, on Tuesday. Meeks was honored for her achievement before the St. Catherine's game.

She has averaged 11 rebounds throughout her varsity career.

Meeks is a volleyball standout (all-LIS) in the fall, then usually shifts seamlessly to basketball. Last spring, she was coaxed onto the track team for the first time. She threw the shot a personal record 33-10, won the LIS title and placed third in the state.

She is mixing track and basketball this winter with the blessing of her coaches. In her first competition (Dec. 10), she threw the shot 34-6 and broke Jessica Groopman's school indoor record, set in 2004, by 2 feet, 11 inches.

Moses undecided

What's left for Meadowbrook football star Morgan Moses to do?

Make a college choice.

Moses is just back from the nationally-televised U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, where the 6-7, 330-pound offensive tackle played for the winning East team.

It was the second showcase for Moses, who played for the winning team in the first Hawaii/Polynesian vs. Mainland Bowl in Honolulu before the Christmas break. He made it back in time for exams.

Moses was named to the all-Central District, all-Central Region, All-Metro and all-state (Associated Press) first teams.

Some of the players in the All-American Bowl made their college choices at halftime of the game. Moses told Meadowbrook coach Bill Bowles he wouldn't make his choice then and didn't.

Moses has a number of major offers, including Virginia and Virginia Tech. Inside Carolina says Moses is expected to visit the University of North Carolina this weekend.

Sportsmanship awards

The Central Virginia Football Officials Association has awarded its Stretch Gardner and George Gasser sportsmanship awards to Thomas Jefferson and Nottoway high schools.

During the football season, officials rate the schools for sportsmanship. The Gardner award is presented to the highest rated Group AAA and Prep League school served by the CVFOA. The Gasser goes to the Group AA, A and independent schools.

Fork Union and Manchester were the runners-up for the Gardner. West Point and Central Virginia Home School (Disciples) were second and third in the Gasser voting.

Thomas Jefferson and Nottoway will be recognized during the Touchdown Club of Richmond's All-Metro banquet Jan. 29 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The CVFOA consists of more than 225 officials and serves more than 65 schools. - Arthur Utley
