ROCKVILLE, Md. - Richmond defender Yomby William's own goal was in the difference in the Kickers 1-0 loss to the Real Maryland Monarchs yesterday.
William took up position near the net after a Maryland cross brought Kickers goalie Ronnie Pascale off the line to try and clear the ball out of the box. Instead, the Monarchs' Lucio Gonzaga got a foot on the ball and it went out of Pascal's reach, ricocheted off William's thigh and into the net for the own goal.
Richmond had two opportunities during stoppage time but their efforts fell short. Kickers defender Anthony Peters had a well-placed header on goal inside the final minute of stoppage time but the Monarchs cleared the ball off the line. Forward Matthew Delicate followed up Peters' shot with a laser, but it skimmed the crossbar and came to rest in the top netting.
