Virginia Commonwealth University is set to hire Florida assistant coach Shaka Smart as its new basketball coach, said two sources close to the situation.

Smart, 32, succeeds Anthony Grant, who left to become Alabama's coach.

A press conference to introduce Smart has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Siegel Center. It is open to the public.

Smart was an assistant this past season at Florida, a role Grant also held before taking the reins at VCU.

Before joining Billy Donovan's staff with the Gators, Smart spent two years as an assistant at Clemson and three years as an assistant at Akron. He also has served as the director of basketball operations at Dayton and as an assistant at California University of Pennsylvania.
