Branden Williams scored on a pair of catches - one on offense, one on defense - as unbeaten L.C. Bird turned away James River 20-7 in a Dominion District game at James River last night.
Williams scored on a 44-yard pass from Anthony Harris with 1:26 left in the first quarter for the Skyhawks (4-0, 6-0), ranked second in The Times-Dispatch Top 10.
Then, with the Rapids driving at the start of the second half, Williams picked off a pass and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown.
James River got on the board in the fourth quarter when Matt Brooks capped an eight-play, 50-yard drive with a 5-yard run. But Bird answered with a 12-play drive to put the game away.
Lionel Williams, who scored on a 7-yard run, had 126 yards on 21 carries for the Skyhawks. James Santiago had 10 tackles, including two for a loss, and Deon Clarke added eight tackles.
Kevon White had 69 yards on 12 carries for the Rapids (2-3, 3-3), who have just one win in 16 meetings with Bird.

Andre Coble rushed for four of Meadowbrook's six touchdowns as the top-ranked Monarchs defeated the Royals (0-3, 1-5) in a Central District matchup.
Coble finished with 11 carries for 181 yards, and was 3 for 6 passing for 85 yards. Domico Phillips had 13 carries for 101 yards for Meadowbrook (3-0, 6-0), which totaled 476 rushing yards.

Eric McGruger also played quarTerback. He ran for 132 yards and one TD and passed for another. Petersburg had 468 yards of offense.
Quinton Spain led the defensive effort by forcing four Hopewell (0-3, 1-5) fumbles and recovering two. Carlos Turner made nine tackles and Josh Allen had five solo tackles and eight total.

Derrick Wells intercepted a pass for a touchdown, and Joel Caleb carried the offense to give the Cavaliers a Dominion District win over the Lancers.
Terrell Hackney put Manchester (2-2, 3-3) ahead with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Donald Holmes in the first quarter. After Wells' interception and Caleb's 2-point run gave Clover Hill the lead, Hackney found Brandon Briggs (54 yards) for an 8-yard score to give the Lancers the lead again. Hackney finished with 116 yards passing.
Caleb ran for 147 yards on 32 carries and the Cavaliers (3-1, 5-1) finished with just 167 yards of offense. Caleb's 32-yard touchdown run was the winner for Clover Hill.
Holland Fisher led the Cavs' defense with six tackles and 1½ sacks, including a sack of Hackney to end the game. Deonte Strother had six tackles and 1½ sacks and Mo Gross had six tackles.
Jonathan Terason led a yeoman effort for the Lancers with 13 tackles, four for loss and a sack. Briar Nelson and Cal Johnson each had nine tackles.

Thomas Jefferson (0-3, 0-6) led 6-0 at the half after Guy Roane caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Marvin Robinson (16 for 38, 130 yards, 1 TD, 4 interceptions). Darius Simpson had seven receptions for 87 yards for the Vikings.
Alvin Butler (63 yards) scored from a yard out, and Hudgins ran in the 2-point conversion to put Douglas Freeman (1-2, 2-4) ahead. Hudgins' 37-yard touchdown run put the Rebels in control for good. Chris Patterson and Blake Louthan sealed the win with interception returns for scores.
