Jim Zorn will remain the Washington Redskins coach "for the rest of this season and hopefully into the future," a team executive said on a radio talk show this morning.
Vinny Cerrato, the vice president of football operations, made his comments on ESPN 980's Inside the Red Zone, the Washington Post is reporting on its Web site.
"The team is tight, the relationships are tight, and we're just trying to prepare to win a game Monday Night and excite the fans and get the fans back excited about this football team," the Post quoted Cerrato as saying. "We just want to beat the Philadelphia Eagles Monday night.
Zorn's future had been cast in further doubt after the Redskins' loss to previously winless Kansas City when the team tapped Sherman Lewis, a consultant and former longtime assistant coach, to call offensive plays instead of Zorn. Zorn said the move wasn't forced on him and that he backed whatever was needed to help the team win.
Cerrato, who has also come under fire this season, defended the operations of the team and said that owner Dan Snyder has confidence in the organization.
"And there's a lot of media people like you and everybody else out there that says Dan Snyder needs to come out and talk, Dan needs to say this, do that. Dan has never spoken to the media during the season for over a decade now. And Dan's thing is, he feels that during the season, the stage belongs to the head of football operations, the coaching staff, the players. That's why he doesn't talk, all right?" the Post quoted Cerrato as saying.
