QUICK KICKS Score: No.13 Virginia Tech 16, No.19 Nebraska 15 For starters: Nebraska led 12-10 at halftime thanks to four field goals by Alex Henery. The Cornhuskers gained 152 yards on 24 plays in the first half. Six plays accounted for 124 of those. The longest were runs of 20, 20 and 31 yards by tailback Roy Helu Jr., who finished the half with 11 carries for 82 yards. Turning point: The Hokies were down 15-10 when they got the ball at their 12-yard line with 1:44 left in the game. On the drive's second play, Tyrod Taylor found Danny Coale for an 81-yard pass that set up an 11-yard touchdown pass to Dyrell Roberts with 21 seconds remaining. Star of the game: Taylor. No one will remember his final passing numbers - 12 of 27 for 192 yards - from this game. All everybody will recall are those two passes to Coale and Roberts and how Taylor scrambled around, made time and eventually found his receivers. Big picture: Tech must correct the errors that surfaced last night - too many dropped balls on offense, too many big plays allowed on defense - if it wants to win its third consecutive ACC championship. That quest begins with Saturday's ACC opener against Miami. Go figure: 1990 - The last time the Hokies won a game in which they did not score a touchdown, which almost happened yesterday because Nebraska managed just five field goals. Next: The Hokies open their ACC schedule with a big game Saturday, when they host their old Big East rival Miami at 3:30 p.m. The Hurricanes (2-0) beat Florida State 38-34 to begin the season and hammered Georgia Tech 33-17 on Thursday. The game will be shown regionally on ABC and elsewhere on ESPN.
