Virginia Tech guard Ben Boggs will transfer at the end of this semester because he wants to play more, the school announced Tuesday.
Boggs, a 6-4 sophomore from Roanoke, played in this season's first four games, getting a total of 11 minutes and five points, all in a 92-70 win at North Carolina-Greensboro. He did not play in the past four games. Last season he appeared in 25 of 34 games, including 11 of 16 ACC contests. He averaged 2.2 points in 8.6 minutes.
As last season progressed, it became clear that Erick Green, now a sophomore, would be the Hokies' top reserve guard. He averaged 2.6 points in 12.6 minutes last season and five points in 15.2 minutes this season.
Boggs' departure means the Hokies next season should have 13 scholarship players, the NCAA maximum.
They currently have 13 and will lose four seniors. Forward J.T. Thompson was going to be a senior this season, but he is out all year after injuring his knee in a preseason practice. He will be a fifth-year senior next season.
Tech's coaches have signed four recruits for next season and want to land another, a post player. But because Thompson is returning, they could only bring in a fifth recruit for 2011-12 if one of their current players left with eligibility remaining.
"Ben has been a valuable member of our team the last two years," Tech coach Seth Greenberg said, according to a statement issued by the school's athletic department. "He has been a model student-athlete. I wish him nothing but the best and will be available to him as he pursues his next opportunity."
Said Boggs, in a statement: "I have enjoyed my time at Virginia Tech and would like to thank coach Greenberg and the coaching staff for all they have done for me. A desire for more playing time is the reason I'm leaving Virginia Tech. I will miss my teammates and wish them the best of luck in the future."
