Becca Wann: A Titan worth remembering

Why you know her: Wann, one of the most versatile and successful athletes the Central Region has ever produced, carried the concept of individual excellence to remarkable levels in 2009-2010. She became the first individual chosen as a Times-Dispatch All-Metro player of the year in two sports in one school year. Wann was cited for her sterling performances in girls basketball and girls soccer at Cosby High School.

Neither selection was particularly difficult. In basketball, Wann, a 5-11 guard/forward, averaged 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while earning Central Region player of the year distinction. Her team reached the quarterfinal round of the state Group AAA tournament.

In soccer she was, if possible, better. A clever midfielder, she scored 24 goals and assisted on six others while earning another Central Region player of the year trophy. She attached an exclamation point to her final year at Cosby by leading the Titans to the state Group AAA championship match. Her performance in Cosby's shootout victory over Loudoun Valley in the state semifinals was the stuff of myth. Wann moved from midfield to goal -- a position she hadn't played in four years -- prior to the shootout. She stopped Loudoun Valley's first two penalty kicks, thereby enabling Cosby to win the shootout 4-2.

What's new: Wann has slowed down not at all since enrolling at the University of Richmond. She was chosen as the Atlantic 10 women's soccer rookie of the year at the conclusion of a season in which she scored 10 goals, four of them game-winners. She is currently averaging 10 minutes per game as a reserve guard on UR's women's basketball team.

Said UR women's soccer coach Peter Albright: "She is a humble, gracious kid who would die to win a game; she just makes everyone better."
