Collegiate girls, Fork Union boys take track titles

FORK UNION - Collegiate's girls won their third consecutive League of Independent Schools indoor track and field championship, and Fork Union Prep captured its fifth Prep League boys title in six years yesterday at the Estes Athletic Center.


The Cougars won six events and placed well in the other nine to amass 172 points. St. Catherine's placed second in the LIS (148), and Trinity Episcopal (58) was third.


In the Prep League, Fork Union captured eight events and placed in six others to score 154 points. Defending champ St. Christopher's was second (104) and Collegiate third (80).


In the LIS meet, Collegiate was victorious in all three relays: 3,200 (Kathleen Melnick, Courtney Chase, Jasmine Turner, Janie O'Connor), 800 (Katherine Melson, Hannah Myers, Becca Martin, Austin Pruitt), and 1,600 (O'Connor, Chase, Martin, and Julia Sroba).


Britt McCauley (shot put), Myers (55 hurdles), and Sroba (1,600) won individual titles for the Cougars.


Trinity Episcopal's Jordan Stokes, victorious in the 55, 500 and 300, was selected the outstanding overall performer in the LIS meet.


The Titans' Hannah Lieberman, winner in the 1,000 and 3,200 and runner-up in the 1,600, was the outstanding running event performer.


Laura Kerr of St. Catherine's earned outstanding field-event performer honors on the strength of her LIS title in the long jump and second-place finish in the high jump behind teammate Kate McDowell.


In the Prep League meet, Hiter Harris of St. Christopher's, who won the 55 and 300 and with Miles Jackson, Hunter Johnson, and Keaton Hillmon outsprinted the field in the 800 relay, earned outstanding running-event performer recognition.


The Saints' James Douglass captured the triple jump.


The team of Logan McCann, Robert Richardson, Wes Butler, and David Allen won the 3,200 relay.
