University of Richmond baseball player Jake Mayers, last year's Central Region player of the year at Hanover High School and the Times-Dispatch player of the year, was among three Spiders who last Thursday were charged with burglary and grand larceny. All three have been suspended from UR's team.
The charges, filed in Richmond General District Court, stem from an on-campus incident that occurred during UR's spring break.
Mayers, a pitcher and infielder, started seven games and batted .281 with two homers for UR. He also pitched three innings. Andrew Lowry, a junior outfielder from Schertz, Texas, and Blake Geiger, a freshman pitcher from Baltimore, were also charged. Lowry made 11 starts and batted .340 this season. Geiger had not pitched for Richmond.
A preliminary hearing for Mayers is scheduled for May 25. Lowry and Geiger have preliminary hearings scheduled for April 16.
"I cannot comment on any specific student-athlete's situation," said UR Athletic Director Jim Miller. "However, in accordance with our student-athlete code of conduct, any student-athlete charged with a felony is immediately suspended from all team activities."
All three were charged with felonies. Team activities include practice.
In his four seasons at Hanover, Mayers went 27-6 with a 1.17 ERA and seven saves. The 2009 all-state player struck out 319 and walked 55 in 221 2/3 innings.
