ROCKVILLE, Md. David Hertel makes his living as a defensive soccer player. But that doesn't mean he is incapable of contributing in the attacking third of the field.
A dandy run along the right wing by defender Hertel led directly to Matthew Delicate's goal in the 77th minute as the Richmond Kickers captured their first victory of the USL-2 season last night, 1-0 over the Real Maryland Monarchs.
Hertel, a former standout performer at Michigan State, eluded two defenders as he approached the 18-yard box. He slipped a deft pass to Delicate, who punched a short shot past Real Maryland goalkeeper Brian Levey. The goal was Delicate's third of the season.
Richmond (1-1-1) will visit the Pittsburgh Riverhounds this afternoon at 3. The Kickers collected two victories and a tie in three meetings with Pittsburgh last year.
