The Richmond Flying Squirrels and the San Francisco Giants will be affiliated for the next two seasons.
The Double-A Eastern League franchise and the Giants this morning announced the two-year extension of their player-development contract, which was expected. The previous player-development contract involving the Squirrels and the Giants expires at the end of this season.
The Giants and the franchise that was based in Norwich, Conn., before relocating to Richmond last September have been linked since 2003. The Washington Nationals apparently had some interest in moving their Double-A operation to Richmond, but stayed in Harrisburg, which is completing a $45-million ballpark renovation.
The Nats and Harrisburg will also be affiliated for the next two years.
The Squirrels also announced that former Giants left-hander and American League Cy Young Award winner and MVP Vida Blue will be in attendance at the Squirrels game at The Diamond Friday to help commemorate the affiliation extension.
