The Richmond Kickers scored a key offseason goal Tuesday by signing free agent attacker Jason Yeisley to a long-term USL PRO contract.
Yeisley, a 6-foot-1 center forward, earned second-team all-USL PRO status last season by scoring five goals and assisting on two for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
Kickers coach Leigh Cowlishaw called Yeisley, 25, "one of the best forwards in USL PRO. We felt all along that he was a player we really wanted and needed on our team. Outside of our returning players, he was our No. 1 (offseason) target."
Yeisley, a two-time all-Big Ten performer at Penn State, was chosen by FC Dallas in the third round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. He made six appearances with FC Dallas before signing with the Riverhounds. He logged more than 1,600 minutes with Pittsburgh in 2011.
Cowlishaw said Yeisley's versatility, skill around the goal and "exceptional work ethic" identified him as a nice fit for a Kickers club that reached the semifinals of the USL PRO playoffs and the U.S. Open Cup in 2011. Yeisley's arrival, Cowlishaw said, "should create a very, very competitive squad" on which players will be forced to "fight for spots in the starting 11."
The Kickers recently secured the services of two returning players, midfielder Michael Callahan and forward Ryan Heins, for the 2012 season.
