Kellie Wells, a 2001 James River High School graduate who became a two-time All-American at Hampton University, won the 100-meter hurdles Sunday at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., with a world-best clocking of 12.5 seconds, beating the year’s top mark of 12.58 that she had run on May 6 in Doha.
Wells, who qualified for the world championships, edged Danielle Carruthers and Olympic gold medalist Dawn Harper. Wells jumped up and down in delight when she spoke with reporters afterward. “It’s my first world team,” she said.
Walter Dix completed the 100-200 double, meaning he’ll be the headliner on the American world team that will be missing Tyson Gay, Lolo Jones, Wallace Spearmon and a handful of other regulars.
Dix completed his sprint double by running the 200 in a wind-aided 19.95 seconds.
Carmelita Jeter’s shot at the women’s 100-200 double blew up when Shalonda Solomon accelerated past her in the last 50 meters to win with a world-best time of 22.15.
