The Richmond Kickers will test their readiness for the upcoming USL PRO season by playing host to the University of Maryland, reigning ACC men's soccer champion, Saturday at 5 p.m. at Ukrop Park. Kickers officials anticipate a capacity crowd at the 500-seat facility near the intersection or Iron Bridge Road and Chippenham Parkway. Fewer than 50 tickets remain.
Maryland-Kickers friendlies, said Richmond coach Leigh Cowlishaw, "always produce great soccer and highly spirited affairs." Cowlishaw said the match "will be an ideal preseason test for our squad."
Maryland has produced 17 consecutive winning seasons, 30 NCAA tournament invitations and a pair of national championships (2005 and '08). Last year's club reached the NCAA quarterfinals.
The Kickers, the USL-2 runners-up in 2010, appear to be assembling another capable club. Two former Kickers standouts, attacking midfielders David Bulow and Stanley Nyazamba, will rejoin the club for the 2011 season.
Tickets for the match are available at www.richmondkickers.com.
