Luke Scherzer, a junior RHP from Powhatan, has made a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech. Scherzer injured his wrist last winter and pitched in only one game last season.
He played right field and shortstop, batting .508 with six home runs and 38 RBI. Scherzer was recruited by Maryland, South Carolina, East Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Old Dominion.
Tech is considering him a two-way player.
James River catcher Collin Lawless has committed to Longwood. Lawless is just one of many Rapids who have either made Division I commitments or are expected to make a Division I commitment, including P Tyler Carrico (Virginia), P Nathan Kirby (Virginia), P Kit Scheetz (Virginia Tech), 1B/P Jack Roberts, 3B Mac Caples and possibly OF Michael Trentham.
