There will be no return engagement for Dave Clawson as University of Richmond football coach, at least not this time around.
Clawson led the Spiders to a pair of FCS playoff appearances during 2004-07, and brought together the team that Mike London coached to the 2008 national championship and to an 11-2 record in 2009. Clawson on Monday answered "no comment" when asked if UR officials had reached out to him about the Spiders' job. But he did say that he is happy as Bowling Green's coach and will not be coming back to UR.
"I'm committed to being at Bowling Green and continuing to improve the program here," Clawson said.
Bowling Green went 7-6 with a veteran team in 2009, Clawson's first season. It went 2-10 last season and 5-6 this year. About 73 percent of the roster members have at least three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Wayne Lineburg was Clawson's offensive coordinator at UR from 2004 to 2006, and returned to UR in that capacity in 2010 under Latrell Scott. Lineburg was elevated to coach for this season after Scott was charged with DWI on Aug. 23. Lineburg, whose Spiders team went 3-8, is a candidate for the position, according to UR athletic director Jim Miller. John Shoop, North Carolina's offensive coordinator, is among those also being considered.
"I feel very strongly about Wayne," Clawson said. "I think Wayne, if given the time, would do an excellent job there. Jim and the administration have to do what they feel is best for the University of Richmond and the football program, but I'm certainly a big fan of Wayne's.
"I think he's an excellent coach and — this often gets overlooked, and it's very cliché to say it, but — he's even a better person. He's a great, loyal guy. Of my 12 years of being a head coach, and I don't know how many assistant coaches, Wayne is certainly in that top group of guys I've ever had work for me."
