Virginia offensive coordinator Bill Lazor isn't going anywhere — yet.
Lazor, whose background is almost exclusively in the pro game, interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the coordinator position on new coach Greg Schiano's staff. He had the blessing of U.Va. coach Mike London.
However, the position wasn't a fit, and as of now, Lazor remains the play-caller for the Cavaliers.
The news served as a reminder to U.Va. fans that while Lazor is content in Charlottesville and enjoys working with the Wahoo staff, he's also not in his dream job.
With the NFL coaching carousel winding down for the season, it looks as though London won't have to do any scrambling in 2012.
"I'm a firm believer in the continuity of the overall staff and I think the combination of quality assistant coaches and support staff have contributed to our success so far," London said in an e-mail. "At the same time, opportunities present themselves that I feel are important for our staff to investigate and possibly pursue for their personal development, and to allow them to meet their personal goals."
Lazor recently extended his initial three-year contract into a five-year agreement, and is guaranteed employment at U.Va. through 2015 at a salary of $453,000 annually. The money in the pro game wouldn't represent a substantial leap forward, but it would allow him back in the NFL.
Lazor last spoke to reporters during last week's signing day festivities, wearing a sling from recent shoulder surgery. He also was rumored to have been looking at NFL jobs after the 2010 season, but quickly shot that down.
Many of Lazor's stories are peppered with anecdotes from his time working under one of his mentors, Joe Gibbs, with the Redskins. He also spent time in Atlanta with Dan Reeves and Seattle with Mike Holmgren. Lazor had been in the NFL as an assistant coach from 2003-2009 when London came calling.
