The University of Richmond was outscored 14-5 in the last four minutes and fell 69-67 to George Washington on Saturday before 8,011 at the Robins Center in an Atlantic 10 Conference game.
The Colonials (9-16, 4-7) beat Richmond (13-13, 4-7) in both regular-season meetings.
UR’s Darien Brothers missed a 22-footer from the right wing at :03 after GW’s Tony Taylor missed the front end of a one-and-one with the Colonials leading 69-67 with 9.9 seconds left.
Sophomore forward Derrick Williams scored 21, including 11 for 11 from the free-throw line, to lead Richmond. UR center Darrius Garrett had 11 rebounds and 5 blocks in one his most active games as a Spider.
Richmond’s top three scorers coming into this game – Brothers, guard Kendall Anthony and guard Cedrick Lindsay – combined to miss 21 of 26.
When these teams met in Washington on Jan. 18 (83-65 GW win), Richmond did not have starting point guard Lindsay (knee bruise).
NOTE: Richmond wore red to salute the Go Red Campaign to fight heart disease.
The Spiders play at Saint Louis (20-5, 8-3) on Wednesday.
