Moye shows her stuff at Millrose Games

Cosby sewed up the Dominion District again last week without the assistance of distance standout Megan Moye, who spent the weekend in New York.

Moye participated in the New Balance high school girls mile at the 105th Millrose Games at the Armory. Moye, who was in the field with Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase, Virginia's Gatorade cross country runner of the year, finished second, posting a time of 4:49.95. Samantha Nadel of North Shore (N.Y.) won the event in 4:46.19. Chase finished fifth (4:54.14).

Favorite's role belongs to Cosby's girls

Cosby coach Bryan Still acknowledged going into the Atlantic Coast Invitational two weeks ago that his Titans weren't going in to win. He simply wanted them to run fast times. But the Titans' victory over some of the state's elite teams proved two things: 1) they're peaking at the right time and 2) they're still the clear-cut favorites to repeat as Central Region champions.

Cosby returned the majority of last season's team and goes into the meet this weekend ranked first in eight events.

Thomas Dale, Meadowbrook and Patrick Henry all might be able to steal points.

Atlee lost a lot of points from last season's boys championship team due to graduation, but returns a strong middle-distance team group, which features cross country runner of the year Nathaniel Hall.

Capital District champion Highland Springs and Central District champion Matoaca will be in contention for the boys title. So, too, will Cosby.

The Central Region meet begins Friday at 4 p.m. at the Ashe Center with the girls long jump. The first running event begins at 6 with the girls 55 hurdle semifinals. Saturday's schedule begins with the girls triple jump at 9 a.m.

Bell lap

  • Louisa's Javanique Burruss won the girls long and triple jumps, the 55 hurdles and was a member of the winning 800 and 1,600 relay teams at last Wednesday's Jefferson District championships. The Lions, however, placed third.
  • Louisa's boys, powered by 22 points in both the 55 hurdles and 55 dash, won the district easily with 105.5 points. Second-place Western Albemarle finished with 79.
  • New Kent got wins from Coy Robinson in the boys long jump, and Jonathan Fowler in the boys pole vault at Thursday's Bay Rivers District championship meet. The Trojans finished third overall with 75 points. New Kent's girls finished eighth with 13.3 points.
