Hopewell's Allala wins fourth straight state title

FAIRFAX -- Cody Allala won his fourth straight Group AAA wrestling title Saturday night. In the 160-pound weight class, he defeated Ryan Forrest of South Lakes 14-2.

Allala is the first wrestler from the Central Region to claim four state titles. He's the 18th from the state. Allala cruised in the semifinals, defeating Mark Darry of Hylton 15-0.

Tanner Tinsley of Hanover claimed his second state title when he beat Ryland O’Brien of First Colonial 3-2 in the title bout of the 170-pound weight class. Tinsley said the second title is definitely better than the first.

“It’s easy to get to the top,” Tinsley said. “It’s harder to stay.”

Neal Richards of Matoaca won the Group AAA state wrestling championship in the 120-pound weight class. He stormed past Robert Dooley of Madison 20-7.

Richards breezed through most of the tournament. After edging Brett Sain of Cox 10-9 in the quarterfinals, he beat Austin Riggs of Robinson 17-2 and pinned Eddie Bracy of Ocean Lakes in 4:16.

Richards suffers from asthma. So to strengthen his lungs, he took up the trumpet. That’s just one example of his dedication.

“All holidays,” Matoaca coach Michael Moore said. “He was constantly putting in time."

FRIDAY

Hopewell High School's Cody Allala got off to a flying start at Friday's Virginia High School League Group AAA wrestling championships.

Allala opened the first day of competition at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax by beating Washington and Lee's Jared Deiner 16-0 in their 160-pound match. He then defeated Hickory's Mason Mele 16-1 in the quarterfinals.

Allala, who became just the seventh wrestler to win four Central Region titles last weekend, can become the 18th wrestler in state history to win four state titles if he wins his semifinal and final matches today.

Hanover's Tanner Tinsley (170) also won his first two matches, and will resume action in today's semifinals.

Matoaca coach Michael Moore was beaming after his team defeated two-time defending Central Region champion Hanover last weekend for its first region title.

But the Central Region coach of the year said that achievement was just the beginning.

"We're putting it out on the plate," Moore said after his team hoisted the region trophy. "Two years from today, we want a state title. Northern Region, Eastern Region, watch out. Central Region, we're coming."

Of the eight Warriors who advanced to the state tourney, four reached the semifinals as Neal Richards (120 pounds), Kyle Gordon (126), Jamarr Hairston (132) and Corbin Ramos (182) each won their first two matches.

Thomas Dale's Corey Leonard (113) advanced to the semifinals by pinning Hampton's Darius Gillis in 5:15 and beating Colonial Forge's Jeff Stone 3-1.

James River's Brayden Manchester reached the semifinals at 138 pounds with a 7-2 win over Jay Ives of Langley and a 5-2 win over Freedom's Emmitt Kelly.

Midlothian's Omar Howard (195) qualified for the semifinals as well.
