Moye, Cosby girls eye AAA meet

Cosby's Megan Moye leads a field of Central Region athletes into this weekend's Group AAA championships at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton.

Coming off three record-breaking performances in the Central Region championships at the Arthur Ashe Center, Moye will be the favorite in the 1,600 and one of the favorites in the 3,200. She and the rest of her teammates could be poised to take the title from perennial power Western Branch.

Other Central Region athletes to watch this weekend: Clover Hill's Janae Jones in the girls triple jump; Matoaca's Brianna Hayes, Highland Springs' Sherhae Holloway and Thomas Dale's Taylor Reynolds in the girls high jump; Nick Simmons of J.R. Tucker in the boys high jump and 55 hurdles; Patrick Henry's Shyra Molton in the girls 55; and Matoaca's Jamarian Bates in the boys long jump.

The Group AAA indoor championships begin Friday with the boys triple jump, girls high jump and boys pole vault at noon, with the semifinals of the girls 55 hurdles at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday's events begin at 9 a.m. with the boys high jump. The running events begin at noon with the girls 55 hurdles final.

Louisa boys capture Region II crown

Louisa's boys scored 97 points to grab the Region II indoor championship held last week at the Estes Athletic Center at Fork Union. Second-place Western Albemarle finished with 48 points.

Marcus Burley, a sophomore, won the 55 hurdles (8.02). Classmate Raeshawn Bishop won the 500 (1:09.5).

Louisa's Javanique Burruss won the girls long jump (18-4 1/4 ), 55 hurdles (8.49) and was a member of the winning 800 relay team (1:49.67). Other members of the team were Monica Mallory, Shadelle Gregory and Natese Ragland. Burruss was outdistanced by one-quarter of an inch in the girls triple jump by Charlottesville's Christian Edwards, who won the event with a leap of 35-2 ¼ .

Bell lap

  • Eddie Whitlock, a senior at St. Christopher's, won the 1,600 in 4:20.19, a meet record, at the LIS championships Saturday at St. Christopher's. . . . Collegiate's girls 1,600 relay team of Hannah Myers, Madeline White, Katherine Nelson and Austin Pruitt won in a record time of 4:05.37. . . . Pruitt set a record in the 300 (41:42), and Myers set a mark in the 55 hurdles (8.87). . . . St. Catherine's won LIS title, and Fork Union won the Prep League championship.
  • In the Region I indoor championships, New Kent's boys 3,200 relay team won in 8:26.27. The Trojans finished eighth with 25 points. The girls were 12th with three points.
