On Jan. 12, 2010, Patrick Henry went into a home game against Deep Run with a record of 11-0 and 5-0 in the Colonial District. Deep Run ended the Patriots' unblemished mark that night, winning 55-51.
Two days short of the one-year anniversary of that loss, Patrick Henry was in the same situation, entering Tuesday's game against the Wildcats with a perfect record.
"We talked about not having history repeat itself," Patrick Henry coach Phillip Cobb said.
Fueled by senior forward Katie Anderson's 20 points and 10 rebounds, as well as senior guard Jasmine Smith knocking down four 3-point shots, the Patriots defeated the Wildcats 53-43, avoiding another Wildcats spoiler.
The win was not easy as Deep Run went on a 17-2 run to start the second half. The surge erased the Patriots' 16-point halftime lead as the Wildcats cut the gap to one point.
"They are a well-coached team," Cobb said. "Deep Run made a great comeback in that third quarter and definitely had us on our heels."
Kelly Siewers led the Wildcats with 17 points and seven assists. Alley Odell registered 12 points and 12 rebounds.
However, sophomore forward Amber Lee and Anderson stepped up for the Patriots in the fourth quarter to stop the Wildcats' onslaught, with eight and five points in the period, respectively.
"Katie is our leader," Cobb said. "She played exceptionally well tonight. She was able to drive to the basket and made some tough free throws at the end of the game."
In three games against Deep Run last season, Anderson scored 19, nine and 17 points. This season, she had 22 points in a 55-46 victory on Nov. 29.
"It was good to get out there and put some points up there for my team," Anderson said.
Smith, on the other hand, has had three anterior cruciate ligament injuries in a row. Her play against Deep Run and throughout the entire season hasn't been guaranteed.
"We weren't even sure she would play this year," Cobb said. "We just talked about her playing a little bit. When she played before her injuries, she was a premier player. She could really shoot the ball and showed it tonight."
The win improved Patrick Henry's record to 12-0, 7-0 in the Colonial District, with Colonial District foe Hermitage next on the schedule.
Cobb said this win was important because of Deep Run's strength in the district.
"Deep Run is right up there with all the teams in our district and so it's a really good win for us," Cobb said. "We don't look at records. We just try and play at a high level and high intensity."
