State Men's Roundup: ODU downs William and Mary

NORFOLK Chris Cooper scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Old Dominion dominated William and Mary in a 68-44 victory Saturday.

The Monarchs (14-9, 9-2 Colonial Athletic Association) scored the game's first 12 points. William and Mary tied it at 20-all on a 3-pointer by Quinn McDowell, who led the Tribe (4-19, 2-9) with 15 points. That was one of seven first-half treys by William and Mary.

McDowell finished with 15 points for the Tribe. But ODU went on a 20-8 run, scoring the last six points of the half to lead 40-28 at the break. ODU shot 28 for 54 from the floor while the Tribe was just 16 for 40.

GEORGE MASON 89, JAMES MADISON 79: Ryan Pearson scored 29 points and made a key block late to help George Mason defeat James Madison. Vertrail Vaughns and Bryon Allen each added 14 points for the Patriots (18-5, 10-1 CAA), who stretched their win streak to six and pushed their home record to 11-1. Humpty Hitchens tied a career high with 27 points as one of four players for the Dukes (10-12, 3-8) to score in double figures. He added seven assists before fouling out with 12 seconds to play. Andrey Semenov scored 15 points, A.J. Davis added 13 and James Madison failed to win consecutive games for the first time in this year and lost its seventh straight in the teams' series.

ELIZABETH CITY STATE 87, VIRGINIA STATE 55: Angelo Sharpless scored 15 points in the first half and the Vikings hit 17 of 28 (60.7 percent) of their shots in the first half to overwhelm the Trojans. Kenny Mitchell led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Virginia State.

RANDOLPH 61, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY 60: Derrick Woods-Morrow hit 9 of 11 shots for a game-high 22 points and the sharpshooting WildCats surprised the Tigers. Randolph shot 51.1 percent (23 of 45) from the field, 6 of 10 from behind the arc and 9 of 11 from the foul line. J.R. Tucker alumnus Zach Desgain made 3 of 4 from the 3-point line and finished with 13 points. H-SC trailed by 12 in the second half but the rally fell short when Harrison George missed a shot at the buzzer. The Tigers missed a chance to tie Randolph-Macon for second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

EMORY & HENRY 57, BRIDGEWATER 48: Armando Murrell hit all four of his shots and scored 13 points in the second half and Tyler Driver hit 8 of 10 from the foul line after halftime to push the Wasps (9-10, 3-8 ODAC) past the Eagles (5-14, 2-8).

ROANOKE 81, EASTERN MENNONITE 79: Logan Sims' layup with 2 seconds left gave the Maroons (5-13, 1-8 ODAC) their first conference win over the Royals (8-10, 3-6).

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN 89, CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT 74: Chris Astorga went for 25 points and eight rebounds and the Marlins (16-2) pulled away from the Captains (16-4) in a battle of conference leaders.

LYNCHBURG 92, METHODIST 79: Nate Campbell scored 19 of his career-high 30 points in the first half to stake the Hornets (12-8) to an 11-point halftime lead and they cruised past the Monarchs (5-15).

FERRUM 76, GREENSBORO 70: Marcus Mayo led all scorers with 25 points and the Panthers (11-8, 4-3 USA South) tied the Pride (12-7, 4-3) for second in the conference with the win.

AVERETT 87, SHENANDOAH 64: Marquis Scott outscored the Hornets (4-16, 2-5 USA South) 30-29 in the second half and the Cougars (7-12, 2-5) surged to the victory.

CUMBERLANDS (KY.) 65, VIRGINIA-WISE 60: Zavion Neely scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Steve Goins had 15 points and 14 boards to lead the Patriots (12-8, 5-5 Mid South) past the Highland Cavaliers (7-10, 4-6).

POINT (GA.) 81, BLUEFIELD 80: Tory Wooley caught a length-of-the-floor pass and made a jumper at the buzzer to give the Skyhawks (8-16, 5-6 Appalchian Athletic Conference) a comeback win over the Rams (14-11, 7-3).

REINHARDT (GA.) 67, VIRGINIA INTERMONT 58: Ishmael John and David Lawson each scored 18 points to take to the Eagles (12-9, 7-4 AAC) past the Cobras (10-12, 3-7).

SOUTHERN VIRGINIA 90, APPRENTICE 59: Casey Nye had a game-high 21 points and the Knights (9-8) shot a blistering 56.7 percent (17 of 30) in the second half to trounce the Builders (14-6).

VIRGINIA UNION 79, CHOWAN 75: Damion Harris recorded a double-double and the Panthers went on a 15-2 run in a span of 4:07 in the second half to turn back the Hawks. That run came inside a 5:30 spell where Chowan didn't make a basket. Harris grabbed 12 rebounds helped VUU to a 45-26 advantage on the backboard.
