Former Maggie Walker Governor's School star Will Roberts pitched the first perfect game in University of Virginia baseball history Tuesday, a 2-0 victory over George Washington.
Roberts struck out 10 in the Cavaliers' 2,000th win. Roberts struck out Brandon Kelliher and Brett Bowers three times each. Roberts nearly lost the perfect game in the eighth inning. Tyler McCarthy hit a line drive that Roberts knocked down and recovered to retire McCarthy.
Roberts' 98th pitch of the contest induced Ryan Thomas to ground out to Keith Werman for the first perfect game in Division I since 2002 and the eighth in Division I since 1957.
"I had no idea what was going on," Roberts said of the celebration. "I felt people grabbing my legs and I had no idea what they were doing and then they lifted me up. I wasn't really expecting that, but I have the best teammates in the nation. I am really happy for everybody. It is a team effort. It isn't just me."
Ryan Levine went 2 for 4 with a run, and Kenny Swab scored a run for No. 1 Virginia (25-2). George Washington fell to 7-18.
Roberts became the first Cavaliers pitcher since Mike Ballard in 2006 to record a no-hitter.
