Steward basketball superstar Adjehi Baru has cut his mammoth list of college offers down to the final four: UNC, Maryland, Virginia Tech and the College of Charleston, his guardian, Tim Branin, said.
While Baru was considering making his decision before his senior season began, Branin said Baru is more likely to wait until January to ensure the right decision is made.
Baru, a native of the Ivory Coast, is regarded as the top recruit in the state of Virginia for the Class of 2011. His first name is pronounced "uh-jie."
According to Branin, Baru has 182 offers. "There aren't many schools that didn't offer him a scholarship," Branin said. Those offers include every school in the ACC except Duke, everyone in the SEC except Kentucky, half of the Big Ten, all of the Big East except UConn and "every little school in the world," Branin said.
Baru stands 6-9, weighs 224 pounds, has a 35-inch vertical leap and a 7-5 wing span.
Virginia Tech and Maryland recently informed Baru that as far as they're concerned, they see him as the No. 3 big man in the Class of 2011 nationally.
Baru came to Richmond from Laurel, Md., where he attended Archbishop Carroll and played for the prestigious travel team D.C. Assault. Over the summer, Baru played for Team Loaded, which is coached by Tytrail White, who was named John Marshall's new coach this past summer.
“He just blew up over the summer," White said.
Baru lives with the Branin family. Tim's son, Pat, is also a senior and has gotten offers from a few low Division I and mid-major schools, Tim said.
