A first for Maggie Walker GS
Maggie Walker's four-set win over Colonial District foe Douglas Freeman on Monday marked the first time in school history the Green Dragons had bested the Rebels.
Maggie Walker claimed the first set 25-21, dropped set two 25-19 and followed with 25-20 and 26-24 wins to take the match.
Alex Georgiadis helped the Green Dragons' effort with 31 assists, six digs, three kills and three aces. Maggie Walker is 9-9, 6-2 in the Colonial District.
Excitement in the Colonial District
Mills Godwin (12-4, 5-1) topped Deep Run (8-4, 6-1) in straight sets Tuesday, and Maggie Walker has shown tenacity in building its winning district record.
"This year is one of those great years for volleyball when all the teams in the district have great points, games, or matches against each other," Deep Run coach Andy Bretz wrote in an email.
J.R. Tucker, Patrick Henry, Hermitage and Douglas Freeman have shown promise, Bretz said, adding he expects "some surprises as the second half of the season starts."
As far as the Wildcats are concerned, Bretz said he is happy with how his team is developing.
Freshman setter Abby Parsons has done a "great job" running the offense, and middle hitters Julie Snarr, Connor Beightol and Caroline Zukowsky are working to take advantage of their offensive opportunities. Defenders Emma Cleary, Jenna Rayhorn, Mary Dintaman and Casey Marshall are "showing better performance statistics as they gain confidence in the new skills."

Capital Clash
Hanover (7-1, 5-0) and Atlee (6-0, 5-0) meet tonight for first place in the Capital District.
"This is a real good test for both of us," Hawks coach Michael Rohr said. "This can set up the second part of the season. We think we are two of the better teams in the region."
After a couple of tough seasons, Rohr is happy to have the Hawks back in contention. They went 13-8, 8-4 last season, and lost two district matches to the Raiders.
"We felt we matched up very well against them last year," Rohr said. "But we didn't play well in either game. The players were pretty disappointed with how they played."
Only getting better for the Titans
Cosby was off to an excellent start without their superb outside hitter, Jack Wilson, who was battling a foot injury. Titans coach Frank Jenkins said a week ago he wasn't sure when Wilson would return.
"We had to be more of a blue collar team and have more players contribute," Jenkins said.
Tuesday night, Wilson was in the lineup for Cosby's first-place battle with host James River in the Dominion District. The Titans (13-3, 5-0) illustrated how varied their attack is in handing the Rapids (10-1, 5-1) their first defeat of the season, 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21. Wilson had nine kills and four blocks for Cosby. Graham Gresham had nine kills and five blocks, and Derrick Sullivan had eight kills.
