UPDATE: Icy conditions persist today on area roadways

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Icy conditions were prevalent on many Richmond-area roadways this morning, even though Thursday's storm brought far less snow than forecasters had projected and the road crews were warned of the storm days in advance.

The temperature at Richmond was 22 degrees as daybreak approached, and the National Weather Service was forecasting sunny skies and a high of 35 degrees today.

That meant icy roads would be possible well after sunrise.

Many secondary roads throughout the area remained untouched this morning following Thursday's 1-2 inches of snow in the city. Many primary roads still were coated with crunchy ice today, and there were even numerous spots of black ice on interstates this morning.

Authorities warned motorists to be alert to the possibility of slick spots and to exercise caution while driving, especially on overpasses. Allow extra time to get where you're driving, and avoid sudden stops or accelerations.

Today's sunny conditions should help melt some of the ice and snow still on most roads.

The skies are to turn cloudy Saturday, when the high is projected at 38 degrees.

The same forecasters who said Richmond would get up to 5 inches of snow yesterday are now saying there's a chance of snow Saturtday night and into Sunday afternoon. They are not making any snow predictions at this stage _ only that the chance of snow ranges from 40 percent Saturday night to 30 percent Sunday.

The weather service this morning released what it called updated but unofficial figures saying up to 3 inches of snow fell in the Richmond area Thursday.

The totals included up to 3 inches in Hanover County, 2.5 inches in Richmond, 2.2 inches in Chesterfield County and 2 inches in Henrico County.

Elsewhere, up to 4 inches fell in Powhatan County, 3.5 inches in Louisa County, 3 inches in Caroline County and 2.5 inches in Mecklenburg County.
