Virginia’s drought is deepening, a new report says.

Nearly 68 percent of the state is either abnormally dry or suffering from drought, up from 67 percent last week and just 7 percent in late June.

The Richmond area is enduring a severe drought, said the report issued today by the U.S. Drought Monitor, an effort by federal and academic experts.

Richmond’s rainfall this year is more than 9 inches below average, the National Weather Service said.
