UPDATE: Light snowfall dwindles across region

»  Comments | Post a Comment

For the Richmond area, most of the snow is over, the National Weather Service says.

The region got about a half-inch to an inch, said Dan Proch, a weather service meteorologist.

The snow started before 7 a.m. and was over for most of the region by 11 a.m.

The region could get a few more flurries by early afternoon, Proch said.

The snow was already melting in late morning as the temperature climbed a few degrees above freezing. Today's high is forecast to be 42.

Some of the heaviest snow was reported in Louisa and Caroline counties, which had received 3 to 3.5 inches by late morning. Those areas could get another inch or so, Proch said.

Chesterfield, Henrico and Richmond schools closed this morning because of the snow.

Hanover County's defended its decision to hold classes, saying in a statement that the call was based "on the time that the precipitation was scheduled to begin, the actual road temperatures (ranging from 35 to 37 degrees), and the time that the students would arrive at school (by 8:15 a.m.).  Based on these factors, the decision was made that all students could be safely transported during their regular schedule."

The statement added that buses arrived safely at all schools by 8:40 a.m. and that the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said the number of accidents reported during the morning's rush hour was at or below a typical rate.

Some of today’s snow coated area roads and caused icy patches, but Virginia Department of Transportation crews helped by spreading salt and sand.

"The roads were a little difficult for people to maneuver" during the morning commute, but most roads were "in good shape" by midday, said VDOT spokeswoman Sundra Hominik.

The closing of several area school systems also helped by keeping traffic down, Hominik said.
